Fire rages for second day near Greek capital
A major fire south of the Greek capital is raging for the second day, with gale-force winds hampering firefighting efforts. More than 150 firefighters and soldiers using more than 60 vehicles were battling the blaze south of Athens, along with two water-dropping planes and a helicopter. Greece has also asked Italy, France and Croatia for help in the form of more firefighting planes.
Colorado wildfire destroys most homes in state's history
Additional crews were arriving Saturday at a wildfire in northern Colorado that has scorched about 85 square miles and destroyed at least 181 homes, the most in state history. The High Park Fire burning 15 miles west of Fort Collins surpasses the Fourmile Canyon wildfire, which destroyed 169 homes west of Boulder in September 2010.
Earthquake jolts Philippine island of Luzon
AN earthquake with a 6.1-magnitude has jolted the sea area off the Philippine island of Luzon, US seismologists said. The US Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of 35 kilometres and hit at 6.19 am local time some 143 kilometres southwest of the city of Baguio and 181 kilometres northwest of the capital Manila.
Libya gives green light for political campaign
Political campaigning for a national assembly begins on Monday, a milestone in Libya’s troubled path to democratic elections after four decades of dictatorship under late dictator Muammar Qaddafi. The electoral commission announced late on Saturday that candidates have 18 days to campaign, June 18 to July 5 inclusive. It said 2,501 independents and 1,206 political association candidates were eligible to stand after vetting.
Rockets fired on southern Israel ‘linked to Egypt vote’
The two rockets, apparently fired from Sinai, which landed near towns in the deep south of Israel were linked to the Egyptian presidential election, a senior Israeli security source told AFP on Sunday. “The rockets fired at Israel over the weekend were a one-off and carried out by those who wanted to influence the Egyptian presidential election,” he said referring to militant groups in the Sinai.
Ahmadinejad: I will retire from politics in 2013
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad plans to retire from politics when his second term ends next year, AFP quoted him as saying on Saturday in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, scheduled to be published on Sunday. “Eight years is enough,” Ahmadinejad, 55, told the German paper.

Greece holds key elections over EU bailout
Voting has begun in Greece for crucial elections which could determine the country's future in the eurozone. The main contenders, the right-wing New Democracy and left-wing Syriza, are at odds over whether broadly to stick with the tough EU bailout deal, or reject it and boost social spending. Opinion polls are banned for two weeks before voting but unofficial polls say the result is too close to call.
Three blasts hit churches in Nigeria Kaduna province
Three blasts have hit churches in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna. Local emergency services reportedly rushed to the scene but did not release any reports of casualties. All of the blasts happened close to the city of Zaria. Kaduna state has previously seen attacks by the radical Islamist group Boko Haram.
IDF bracing for increased rocket fire from Sinai
The IDF is concerned that rocket fire will increase from the Sinai Peninsula and into Israel over the coming days as Egyptian presidential elections come to a close. A senior defense official said Sunday that Israel had not yet confirmed the identity of the terror cell which launched two rockets into southern Israel on Friday night - one near Uvda and the other near Mitzpe Ramon.
