Venice assesses damage after tornado strike
The twister, packing wind speeds of up to 140kmh, narrowly missed Venice itself, but caused significant damage to several islands in the surrounding lagoon. It struck on Monday but the extent of the damage only emerged later, as emergency officials and the deputy mayor of Venice visited the affected area.

Iraq: Bomb attacks in six provinces 'kill 84'

Russia prepares army for Syrian deployment
...the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper reported that the Russian army is apparently being prepared for a mission in Syria. Citing anonymous sources in the military leadership, the newspaper said that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the general staff to work out a plan for military operations outside Russia, including in Syria.

Huge wildfires hit Colorado and New Mexico
Hundreds of firefighters have joined efforts to tackle two of the biggest wildfires ever seen in the US states of Colorado and New Mexico. Barroso to unveil 'political union' plan at EU summit
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has said member states must agree to a big common budget, a future banking union and - ultimately - political union in order to save the EU. His speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday (16 June) comes before an EU summit on 28 June.
'Hezbollah may move Syrian arms to Lebanon'
Concern is mounting in Israel over the possibility that Hezbollah will try to move sophisticated weaponry, including Scud missiles, from Syria to Lebanon to protect them in the event of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s downfall. The concern stems from reports that Assad might be losing control over certain military capabilities including an air defense base which was captured by rebels earlier this week.
