The unraveling of Iraq: country descending into civil war- 72 killed in latest wave of bombings



January 5, 2012 – IRAQ – Two weeks after a deadly wave of bombings killed 63 people in Baghdad, warring religious sects in Iraq are once again blowing each other up. Well, it’s more likely that al-Qaeda in Iraq is blowing people up – hoping to incite sectarian violence. A suicide bombing targeting Shiite Muslims in Nasiriya, Iraq killed at least 36 people, while dozens of others perished in a series of bombings in Baghdad. According to the Associated Press, at least 72 people are dead as a result of the coordinated attacks. “Our guess is that this is the first of many attacks to come,” we wrote after the initial round of explosions on December 22. Of course we didn’t expect such a speedy, widespread resumption of the terror campaign. The bombings come in the wake of U.S. President Barack Obama’s decision to pull all remaining U.S. troops out of Iraq – ending an eight-and-a-half year war that was based on sketchy intelligence and no clear objective or exit strategy. A total of 4,484 U.S. soldiers died in Iraq. Meanwhile 1,857 U.S. soldiers have died in Afghanistan – 1,227 of them within the last three years. “We don’t particularly care if Iraq’s ‘democracy’ survives,” we wrote last month. “It’s not America’s job to make the world safe for democracy, it’s America’s job to keep this Republic (or what’s left of it) safe from attack. Pardon our isolationist insensitivity, but these warring sects can detonate themselves into oblivion for all we care – as long as our troops aren’t getting caught in the crossfire.” Yes it’s a **** shame that anyone, anywhere in the world is being targeted for obliteration as a result of their religion – but unless there is a clear and present danger to the national security of the United States resulting from the terror, it’s just not something America should get involved in militarily. –Fits News

Wave of violence sweeping across Nordic countries stuns Western observers



January 5, 2012 – SWEDEN – Police are baffled after a wave of shootings has swept across Sweden’s third-largest city, raising concerns that Malmo has become a magnet for gang-related killings. On Thursday dozens of police took to the streets of Malmo to try calm the public and to collect tips about the attacks, which come only a year after a suspected serial shooter was arrested in the city in southern Sweden. In less than six weeks, five people have been shot dead in this city of 250,000, including a 15-year-old boy. Police spokesman Lars-Hakan Lindholm says “it’s exceptional that there have been so many murders in such a short period of time” and that both the motives for the slayings and the perpetrators remain unknown. On Friday, demonstrators in Malmo will protest organized crime. The recent wave of violence that has swept over Nordic countries has stunned Western observers who are accustomed to seeing tranquility among people of the north Arctic region. In the summer of 2011, Anders Behring Breivik shocked and horrified the world when he ruthlessly shot and killed 77 people in Norway. Perhaps the explosion of violence is one more indication that societies’ civility is in a rapid state of decline as appears to be the case across the rest of the planet. –Yahoo News added

Doomsday rumors creates panic across districts in India



January 4, 2012 – Lucknow, INDIA – This is straight from Ripley’s Believe it or not. The panic gripped denizens in UP with rumors of mild tremors and ‘people turning into stone statues’ floated on Tuesday night. Hundreds of people in several districts spilled on roads with fear palpable on their face. The rumor started at around 1 am on Tuesday night. Some SMS were exchanged that sleeping people have turned into stone statues and an earthquake was expected. Soon the SMS took the shape of a rumor with constant forwarding among friends and relatives. People panicked and spilled came out on the road. The numbers swelled every moment. They started calling frantically to their relatives enquiring about their well being. With every passing moment the rumor gained ground. Similar scenes were reported in several other districts as Kanpur, Unnao, Fatehpur, Gorakhpur and others. Calls were made to police control room and the staff tried to discourage the rumor but there were no takers. Amidst this in Muslim localities some of them stated that Qayamat (Doomsday) has arrived and people thronged the mosques. Muezzins also started making announcement urging everyone to come out and pray. Soon the mosques were also fully occupied. Amidst this some enterprising tea stall owners also opened their shop and their whole stock vanished in few hours. Somehow the night passed by amidst fear and apprehension. Greece drops hints of pulling out of Eurozone as austerity measures threaten to unravel country



January 4, 2012 – ATHENS – Greece may have to exit the eurozone if it fails to secure its second EU-IMF bail-out its government has warned, amid new protests against spending cuts. “The bailout agreement needs to be signed otherwise we will be out of the markets, out of the euro,” government spokesman Pantelis Kapsis told Skai TV on Tuesday (3 January). The day before, doctors and pharmacists went on strike in reaction to planned spending cuts, with hospitals taking emergency cases only until Thursday. The latest €130 billion bail-out for Greece was agreed in principle by EU leaders in October, provided Athens cuts deeper into public spending, privatizes some services and state-owned companies and boosts revenues by clamping down on tax evasion. The scenario of a Greek euro exit – previously a political taboo – was first raised by German and French leaders in November after the former Greek premier said he would call a referendum on the bail-out deal. The Greek parliament has already adopted a series of austerity measures, including tax rises and spending cuts. But an evaluation by the EU, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank (ECB) due later this month is likely to demand more. The government spokesman on Tuesday wondered how much more Greece can cut. “We will see what the shortfall is and it is very likely that measures will be required,” Kapsis said. “I also don’t believe it is easy to impose new taxes, but what does cutting spending mean? To close down the public sector? There is no easy solution.” In his New Year’s Eve address, Prime Minister Lucas Papademos warned Greek citizens of more tough times ahead. “A very difficult year lies ahead of us. We must continue our efforts with decisiveness, to stay in the euro, to make sure we do not waste the sacrifices and do not turn the crisis into an uncontrolled and disastrous bankruptcy,” he said. Greece has announced that it could ditch the Euro and exit the Eurozone in as little as 3 months - unless the EU and the IMF fund it with a second 130 billion euro bailout. Talks over the cash life-line have stalled for months over the poor performance of austerity measures and fears for the future. Unknown magma pool causing ground uplift in Oregon



January 4, 2012 – OREGON – Volcanic activity is causing the earth to rise in Oregon, scientists have found. Though whether such uplift is a sign of an imminent eruption remains uncertain. As early as the summer of 1996, a 230-square-mile (600-square-kilometer) patch of ground in Oregon began to rise. The area lies just west of the South Sister Volcano, which with the North and Middle Sisters form the Three Sisters volcanoes, the most prominent peaks in the central Oregon stretch of the Cascade Mountains. Although this region has not seen an eruption in at least 1,200 years, the scattered hints of volcanic activity here have been a cause of concern, leading to continuous satellite-based monitoring. Now 14 years of data is revealing just how the Earth is changing there and the likely cause of the uplift — a reservoir of magma invading the crust 3-to-4 miles (5-to-7 km) underground. The European Space Agency’s European Remote Sensing and Envisat radar satellites revealed that the terrain deformed in three distinct phases since this uplift began. From 1996 to 1998, the ground rose by 0.4 inches (1 cm) per year. Then, from 1998 to 2004, uplift grew to 1.2-to-1.6 inches (3-to-4 cm) annually. However, for the rest of the decade, uplift declined to only a few millimeters per year, for a total of 9.8 inches (25 cm) of uplift so far. “The most important implication of our research is that the ground appears to still be uplifting,” said researcher Susan Riddick, a geodesist at the University of Oregon. ‘Previous researchers believed that the ground uplift, a result of the input of magma deep in the Earth’s crust, had stopped at around 2006. We found that the ground is still uplifting as of late 2010 and may still be uplifting, but at a slow rate.” By analyzing precisely how the landscape was changing, the researchers suggest the magma pocket behind this uplift has a volume of 1.76-billion-to-2.47-billion cubic feet (50-million-to-70-million cubic meters), enough to fill 20,000-to-28,000 Olympic-size swimming pools. Since the ground is still rising, “magma may still be accumulating, and as a result, this area needs to be continually monitored to determine whether or not there will be an eruption,” Riddick told OurAmazingPlanet. “If there were to be an eruption, it would probably not be from a pre-existing volcano that we can see because the uplifting ground area is several kilometers from historically active volcanoes,” Riddick added. ‘A new volcanic vent would likely form. Lava would be ejected from a vent and fall to the ground to create a cinder cone, which is a steep conical volcano made of lava fragments. We believe it would be a small eruption, because we calculated that only a relatively small amount of magma has accumulated in the earth’s crust so far.” –Our Amazing Planet
