New York, September 23, 2011: We welcome the inspiring address of President Obama at the U.N. General Assembly on September 21, 2011. The President spoke eloquently about Peace, Freedom and Prosperity and committed America firmly behind those who pursue these values. He committed the United States to support the settlement of the Israel/Palestinian conflict by a two-state solution on the basis of direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. He said: “Ultimately, it is the Israelis and the Palestinians who must live side by side. Ultimately, it is the Israelis and the Palestinians – not us – who must reach agreement on the issues that divide them: on borders and on security, on refugees and Jerusalem.”
He recognized the need to appreciate Israel’s success in forging a democratic state in the historic homeland of the Jewish people and urged its recognition and acceptance by its neighbors. He said: “The Jewish people have forged a successful state in their historic homeland. Israel deserves recognition. It deserves normal relations with its neighbors. And friends of Israel must recognize the need to pursue a two-state solution with a secure Israel next to an independent Palestine.”
Israel, the state of the Jewish people, has heeded the aspirations expressed by the President. It has accepted immigration from more than 100 countries and forged a participatory democracy where all its citizens enjoy equal full rights under a rule of law, including its Arab citizens. More than 20% of Israelis are not Jewish and participate vigorously in Israel’s sometimes fractious political system.
We should all hope and expect that when a Palestinian state comes into existence, it will follow Israel’s example of participatory democracy. The early indications are not hopeful. No Jews live in the West Bank under the control of the Palestine Authority and will apparently not be welcome in a Palestinian state. Hamas, which rules in Gaza and which now shares political power in the Palestinian Authority, calls for the elimination of the State of Israel, and foresees a state without Jews, one which will be Judenrein.
The President is also correct in his judgment that now is not the time for the U.N. to mandate or recognize a Palestinian state. A two-state solution is desirable only if the states can co-exist in peace, and develop economic and cultural activities which benefit both sides. But what if the result is two states which continue to live on the edge of conflict and violence, where one population continues to hate and incite, and where hostility is rampant? Unless the two states can cooperate as good neighbors, the two-state solution would present serious issues which can lead to even greater suffering.
These are issues which must be faced by the Palestinians, the Arab world, and the world body.
President Obama has laid out a stirring agenda which presents opportunities to address many of the problems facing the world. Let us hope the world is listening.
