Floods swamp tornado-ravaged central US

VICKSBURG, Mississippi: Weary residents in the storm-ravaged central United States packed their belongings into moving trucks and prayed for levees to hold on Friday as swollen rivers swallowed roads, farms and homes.

"When you see the Mississippi River and it's three kilometres wide it's sobering," Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam told CNN.

"We have everything from state prisons to nursing homes that could be in danger from the flooding."

Elaine Fuller, 74, had started putting her belongings in the attic when a federal emergency management agent came to her modest brick ranch home in rural Mississippi and told her she had to leave.

"They said I might be able to see the roof," she said as she walked through the now-empty house near the Yazoo River.

Hundreds of people have been driven from their homes by the rising waters as National Guardsmen and civilian volunteers struggle to build temporary levees and lay out sandbags in front of homes and businesses.

"There are records here being broken that go back to 1927," said Pat Slattery, a spokesman for the National Weather Service.

Much of the flooding comes from the same weather system which sparked the deadliest tornado outbreak in the United States since 1925, which claimed the lives of 350 people across the US south.

That massive storm sucked moisture out of the Gulf of Mexico and brought two weeks of heavy rain to the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys before it finally moved out to sea, Slattery told AFP.

Tributaries across the region have also flooded after the ground became saturated and scores of roads have been closed as the rivers breach their banks.

Most unprotected farmland in northwest Tennessee, southeast Missouri, and northeast Arkansas was swamped and the deep waters covering roadways was hampering evacuation efforts, the weather service said.

Police and firefighters knocked on the doors of more than 1,000 homes and businesses in Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday to warn people to pack up their belongings and seek higher ground.

"Anybody that's ever been flooded before is going to be flooded again, that's a given," Steve Schular, a spokesman for Shelby County, told AFP.

"What we're trying to do is insure the safety of the other people so they can get their belongings out and - most importantly - get themselves out."

Inmates, government workers and volunteers have been filling thousands of sandbags to shore up levees and protect key buildings like hospitals in anticipation of a record crest of the Mississippi River on Wednesday.

But the flood threat is not expected to ease for weeks, and the county's emergency management team is straining to manage the response.

"Starting April 4 we've had continual storms that took down trees and left roads blocked," Schular said from the busy operations centre.

"Now it looks like we're going to be here for at least another month."

Officials warned residents to be wary of wildlife fleeing the rising waters - particularly snakes like the cottonmouth water moccasin which are more aggressive due to mating season.

One Tennessee florist has been using paddle boats to get to her greenhouse and retrieve plants and flowers slated for delivery for Mother's Day on Sunday.

"If God would just take his pinky finger and do whatever he does and blow the water away, man we're ready," Teresa Nance, who owns Bayless Greenhouse in Millington told WREG news.

Signs of Labor
It's the moment you've been waiting for-the birth of your baby. You are excited and scared, overjoyed and sick to your stomach all at the same time. Labor is when all your preparations and care will soon bring you your baby.

Talk to other mothers and you will soon discover that no two labors and deliveries are alike, even for one woman with many children. Some labors last days while others last hours. Some might seem difficult to the mother while others seem like a breeze.

However different each woman's experience of labor might be, there are definite signs of labor and a definite progress labor follows. During your last weeks of pregnancy you may notice small contractions. These serve to soften and thin the cervix so that it will be ready to let your baby into the world. At doctor's appointments, they will probably examine your cervix and tell you the progress of dilation and effacement, two measurements that tell you labor will be coming soon.

A common early sign of labor is called a "show." This is a blood colored mucous plug that has been sealing off the uterus. When it is released, that means your cervix is definitely ready to go, but your mucous plug can appear weeks before labor starts after you've been having contractions for quite a while. So while you will want to pay attention when it comes out, it is not a certain indicator that you will be delivering today.

Contractions are what most of us associate with the beginning of labor. Some women experience intense, frequent contractions right from the start, while other experience mild, intermittent contractions that gradually increase in intensity and frequency. Most childbirth classes will teach you to time your contractions, noting the time from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next as well as how long each contraction lasts. Until the contractions are lasting around a minute or more and occurring with increasing frequency less than five minutes apart, you can most likely labor comfortably at home. There is no need to panic or rush to the hospital. Many hospitals will not admit you if you come too early in labor, so be patient.

Your "water breaking" is usually a sure sign that your labor is underway, but again, some women don't experience their water breaking until the baby is almost here. Actually, the water breaking is the membrane "bag" around the baby popping, and the amniotic fluid inside it is the "water." It can feel like an explosion of water or like you wet your pants. Or it might be a slow trickle you don't even notice. Most doctors will want to make sure the baby is delivered within 24 hours of the water breaking, because the baby is susceptible to infection without the protective membranes.

Early labor is the time to relax, eat a light snack to bolster your energy, get your things ready for the hospital, and keep busy with your normal activities as much as possible. Walk around or do activities on your feet, because that will keep labor progressing steadily. Lying down or sitting may slow down your labor. You will soon be ready to deliver your baby.

Are we being the (church)man-child(nation) to be born soon by Israel(the woman)...then 'tribulation period' for those who give suck in those days?

Dear Doves,
The web site bible gateway is a valuable source of cross reference of themes in The Scriptures in various translations into English. The keyword flood shows 41 examples in The Holman Christian Standard Bible. Of course there are the quotations from Genesis about the Noah family and times. Numbers 29-32 are quotations from Daniel. Flood is likened in these passages to the end of a period, this would seem to be the end of The 70th Week of Daniel. There are listed the passages from Matthew and Luke about flood as related to the beginning of a period. Deluge, excessive rain, and flood are not the same concepts. The rain or deluge is less dangerous than flood and drowning.
We are now at a 120 year flood marker from 1891 to 2011 for the Mississippi River.The major event in 1891 concerned the Ames Crevasse near Jefferson Parish, related to New Orleans. The flooding was in March of 1891, yet took some weeks for the water to recede. Might that have been mid May like 5-17 to 24? With current crisis, the river has crested at Memphis, Tennessee. It will take from 5-17 to 5-24, concerning estimated dates, for the river to crest for Louisiana and Mississippi. New Orleans is the last major city before the Mississippi River flows into the Gulf of Mexico. What will such greater volume of water do to disturb all that crude oil still in the Gulf? We will not know until later this month when that tremendous additional volume of water begins to flow into the Gulf of Mexico. The river is three times wider than normal at Memphis! This variable is like a wild card. It cannot be predicted. This combination of factors, of variables, has never existed before! The build up of crude oil and toxic chemicals and gases began as of 4-19-2010. The gulf is like a cauldron of toxic chemicals. Will there be a stirring up of those toxic chemicals soon? I dread to imagine it.
Some people are looking avidly to 5-20 to 21, Iyar 17, for various reasons. I am looking to each day before Iyar 17, a date associated with the narratives in Genesis about the Noah family and the beginning of the rain leading to deluge, then to global flood.. Of particular interest is The Second Passover on 5-17 to 18 at Iyar 13 going to 14. May we be preparing and repenting and WATCHING each day for the arrival of The Beloved Groom!. His Barley Resurrection Season continues to unfold!
