April has already been a record tornado
month with more expected

A severe weather forecast this week is expected to heap more tornadoes into a month that already has seen a record number of twisters that have wrecked an airport, destroyed homes and killed scores of people.

And May is usually worse than April, forecasters say.

The 292 confirmed tornadoes so far this month are more than the previous April record of 267 in 1974 and almost twice the April average of 163, says severe weather expert Greg Forbes of The Weather Channel. And worse may be yet to come because usually the number of tornadoes in May is double the number in April, Forbes says.

“We’re not yet to the time of year when these types of tornadoes are most active,” he says.

This month’s storms were the result of a surging jetstream combined with a slow-moving stormfront that stretched from Oklahoma as far east as Virginia, says Greg Carbin, a warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla.

The front formed where warm moist air from the South converges on cold dry air from the North, becoming a focus for severe storm and tornado development and heavy rainfall, Carbin says.

“That front isn’t going anywhere, so you get repeat storms and repeat heavy rains,” he said.

Such systems usually form and move on, but this one’s been “in a rut,” which is expected to continue through the coming days. More storms and heavy rain are expected to hit today and Tuesday from northeast Texas to southwest Ohio, Carbin says.

“Eventually this system will shift to the east but it’s going to do it slowly,” likely bringing severe weather to the Carolinas and Virginias on Tuesday and Wednesday, Carbin says. “This is about as bad as you can get in terms of repeat storm activity.”

But Carbin says it’s unclear whether the trend is truly historic.

The high number of tornadoes reported corresponds to an increase seen since tornado reporting began 60 years ago. April tornado reports on average for the decade have increased from 74 in the 1950s to 163 in the 2000s, with only one decrease in the 1980s, he says.

“More people are reporting tornadoes than ever before,” Carbin says. “There may be more tornadoes but how are we going to know?”

The string of tornadoes this month have killed at least 45 people and destroyed hundreds of homes from Manhattan, Kan., to Raleigh, N.C.

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport was closed for 24 hours after a twister raked it Friday night. Airport security videos show trash cans, ceiling tiles and clouds of debris and rain blowing through airport concourses while travelers and Transportation Security Agency employees run for cover, shielding their faces from the debris. The storm knocked out more than 50% of the windows in the airport’s main terminal and showered it with broken glass and rain, according to airport director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge.

The airport, which has 256 daily departures, was operating at 60% of capacity Sunday.

Video Blogs April 2011 Likely to Set Record for Most Tornadoes

April 2011 has been a horrific month for severe weather so far with nearly 900 reports of tornadoes, hundreds of tornado-related deaths and unthinkable destruction.

As the wild weather pattern continues this week, the month's total number of tornadoes continues to rise. There is a good chance that April 2011 will end up being the most active April on record for tornadoes.

With May and June typically being the most active months of the year for severe weather, people are wondering if the trend will continue and make 2011 a record-setting year.

Stats for April

The total number of tornado reports this month (through Monday) was up to 654, according to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC). At least 68 more reports of twisters were submitted Tuesday. The total number of tornadoes for Wednesday and Wednesday night is at least 165, and one tornado was reported Thursday as of 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Therefore, the total for the month is at least 888.

It's important to note that these are the number of reports (or sightings), not confirmed tornadoes. Oftentimes multiple sightings of the same tornado are reported, and it will take quite some time until all the data is sorted through and the number of confirmed tornadoes is determined.

According to the SPC, the highest number of confirmed tornadoes recorded in the month of April (since 1950) was 267 in 1974.

If all of the tornado reports so far this month were confirmed, April 2011 would by far be the most active April for tornadoes. Even though the number of confirmed tornadoes will probably end up being quite a bit smaller, this month is still likely to beat the record.

Stats for 2011

The preliminary estimate for number of tornadoes so far in 2011 was 1,073, as of Thursday afternoon, with about two dozen states affected. More than 100 tornadoes have been reported in both Alabama and North Carolina.

The year that holds the record for the highest number of tornadoes is 2004 with a whopping 1,817 twisters. For people wondering if 2011 could set a new record, this year has a long way to go.

Since May and June are typically the most active months of the year for severe weather, it may seem that 2011 could have a shot at setting a record following such an extreme April. However, AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Ken Reeves pointed out a trend that may suggest otherwise.
