Beijing Police Halt ‘Unapproved’ Church Service
Beijing police on Sunday detained dozens of worshippers from an unapproved Christian church who were trying to hold services in a public space after they were evicted from their usual place of worship, a parishioner said. Leaders of the unregistered Shouwang church had told members to gather at an open-air venue in Beijing for Sunday morning services, but police, apparently alerted to their plans, taped off the area and took away people who showed up to take part.

'Exploding UFOs and alien landings' in secret FBI files
A declassified document from 1949 tells how three men, on patrols miles apart, each reported seeing a UFO break up over mountains north of Salt Lake City. ...The file said that a policeman, a highway patrolman and an army guard all "saw a silver coloured object high up approaching the mountains at Sardine Canyon" that "appeared to explode in a rash of fire."

White House: Obama to lay out spending plan
One budget deal down, President Barack Obama and Congress began to pivot Sunday from the painful standoff over this year's spending to a pair of defining debates over the nation's borrowing limit and the election-year budget. Much will be revealed at midweek, when the House and Senate are expected to vote on a budget for the remainder of this fiscal year and Obama reveals his plan to reduce the deficit, in part by scaling back programs for seniors and the poor.

Army "ready to use force" to clear Cairo square
...Soldiers and police had used tasers and batons to try to drive out protesters from the square, the epicenter of protests that toppled Hosni Mubarak on February 11. Gunshots echoed across the square in the overnight operation. But hundreds defied the army move and stayed. Thousands more joined them on Saturday, demanding power be handed to civilians and calling for the resignation of Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who heads the ruling council.

Tornado destroys dozen or more blocks in Iowa town
...The tornado that struck the evening before damaged more than half of Mapleton, a town of 1,200 in western Iowa, Mayor Fred Standa said Sunday. He estimated about 20 percent of the town was "almost flat." The huge, centuries-old trees the town was named for had been pulled out of the ground and wrapped around houses and tossed on top of cars, Standa said. In one case, a huge motor home had been flipped on its side.

Arab League to appeal for Gaza 'no-fly zone'
Arab League chief Amr Mussa said on Sunday the organisation will ask the UN Security Council to impose a no-fly zone over Gaza, which Israel has pounded with air strikes in response to rocket fire. Mussa told an emergency meeting of Arab League ambassadors that "the Arab bloc in the United Nations has been directed to ask for the convention of the Security Council to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza and impose a no-fly zone."

Libya: African Union offers truce plan to rebels
Members of an African Union delegation are offering a peace proposal to end Libya's eight-week-old conflict to rebel leaders in the city of Benghazi. The AU says the government has already accepted the plan. The delegation met leader Col Muammar Gaddafi on Sunday. Rebels promised to study the plan, but ruled out a truce unless Col Gaddafi stepped down and his forces withdrew.

EU ministers to 'deplore' Syria killings, threaten sanctions
EU foreign ministers will next week step up pressure for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to stop killing protesters and to make good on promises of reform. The ministers plan to say following their meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday (12 April) that the EU "deplores the many deaths resulting from ongoing violence" and that it "stands ready to review its policies towards Syria as appropriate," according to draft conclusions seen by EUobserver.

Israel concerned about Hamas-Egypt relations
Egypt has suspended construction of an underground steel wall along the Egypt-Gaza border that it had been building over the past year in an effort to stop smuggling weaponry through tunnels into the Gaza Strip, defense officials have told The Jerusalem Post. According to the officials, Egypt suspended construction of the underground barrier following the revolution in the country in February which toppled Hosni Mubarak’s regime.

Syrian forces seal off Banias as sectarian tension mounts
Syrian security forces sealed off the coastal city of Banias overnight following sectarian killings by irregulars loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, witnesses said on Monday. Violence in Banias, home to one of Syria's two oil refineries, erupted on Sunday when irregulars from the ruling Alawite minority, known as "shabbiha," or "ghosts," fired at residents with automatic rifles from speeding cars, following pro-democracy protests in the mostly Sunni Mediterranean city.

Lieberman: Gaza ceasefire is not in Israel's interests
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman spoke out against a ceasefire with Hamas on Monday morning, following renewed violence emanating from the Gaza Strip in the past four days. In an interview with Israel Radio, he said "Hamas is fighting a war of attrition against us. We won't come to terms with a situation in which they decide when there's quiet and when the area heats up."

Pumping at Japan reactor stops after 7.1 earthquake hits
Japan's Nuclear Safety Agency said that pumping of water into three Japanese reactors to cool them was halted for about 50 minutes after the latest 7.1 aftershock on Monday, but that it was unlikely to have any impact on safety. Senior agency official, Hidehiko Nishiyama, said: "It was stopped for about 50 minutes... safety issues are unlikely to have occurred from this."
