The purpose of the following study is two-fold:

1. To study unfulfilled and partially fulfilled prophetic Scripture that may shed light on the reason Israel's immediate neighbors will not take part in the "Gog and Magog War".

2. To emphasize the point that God has dealt with Israel's immediate neighbors on a specific basis over and over in Scripture. Therefore, assuming they are included in the "Gog and Magog War" as the "many people" in Ezekiel 38:6 is likely a mistake.

The interest in a future war involving Israel's immediate neighbors started around the time of the Lebanon War in 2006, when a well preserved Bible dated to the medieval times, was found in an Irish bog opened to the 83rd Psalm. This sparked an interest in many prophecy students and teachers, to the possibility that this prophetic Psalm about judgment against Israel's neighbors could be fulfilled in the near future; especially with the strained and seemingly worsening relationship between Israel and her neighbors since the nation was born in 1948. I will refer to this war described in Psalm 83 and its parallel passages as the "Great Middle East War".

It has been found by several prophecy teachers and students that there are parallel passages to the Great Middle East War scattered throughout the Old Testament prophets. For this study, I have attempted to put these parallel passages together to show how they all describe the same war. Also, looking at the passages in this way will hopefully give us a clearer picture of what that war will look like.

The prophetic 83rd Psalm does not have a known fulfillment, so it is assumed to be yet in the future. In fact, this Psalm seems to be speaking of events that could occur today. The seething hatred and common goal the listed members of the confederacy in Psalm 83 have against Israel has led many to believe, including myself, that the fulfillment of this prophetic Psalm may be very soon.

Psalm 83 will be used as a starting point in our study because it appears that all of the members of the confederacy against Israel are listed there. The parallel passages go into detailed prophetic judgments against each member individually. The names given in all the passages reflect their ancient name. By doing a little historical detective work, we find that both people groups and land areas are separately represented in this war. This is important to keep in mind. More will be explained in a few sections about the migration of these ancient people groups and how they are distinct from the inhabitants that live within the political borders of today.







Psalm 83:5-8
For they have consulted together with one consent; They form a confederacy against You: The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagrites; Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assyria also has joined with them; They have helped the children of Lot. Selah


The Political Areas

Moab = Central Jordan
Gebal = City in Lebanon
Ammon = Northern Jordan
Amalek = The Negev into the Sinai
Philistia = Gaza
Assyria = Syria into western Iraq
The political areas that will take part in the "Great Middle East War" are pretty straight forward and can be determined by taking a look at an ancient map compared to a current map. The nations within the confederacy are Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Gaza is technically part of Israel, but is currently occupied by the Arab refugees, known today as the Palestinians; who are trying to form a nation apart from Israel consisting of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.



The People Groups

Tents of Edom = Palestinians
Ishmaelites = Arabs
Hagrites = Clan of Ishmaelites
Inhabitants of Tyre = Lebanese
The Descendants of Lot
= Moabites and Ammonites
The people groups are a little fuzzier to discern. The question in my mind is why even list people groups separate from the nations? I think the answer lies in the political situation that will be in place in the areas surrounding Israel at the time that this war takes place.

Not only is Israel surrounded by hostile nations, but also hostile refugee and terrorist groups that reside within Israel's borders and her neighbors borders. The historical migration of these people groups will help determine who they might be describing in today's world.
