France & Merkel beg citizens to take Oxford jab after millions of doses remain unused

The European Union faced vaccine chaos on Thursday after both France and Germany were forced to urge their citizens to get vaccinated. Both countries have seen low uptakes of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine after EU leaders falsely claimed the inoculation was ineffective.

The French government admitted the Oxford vaccine has an “image problem” and that there had been “feeble” uptake of the jab in France. President Macron previously made false claims about the vaccine, which has been shown to be 94% effective at reducing coronvairus admissions to hospitals accoridng to real world data from Scotland.

Just 107,000 people in France have had the AstraZeneca vaccine, with authorities desperate to “rehabilitate” its image. Meanwhile in Germany 1.5 million doses of the jab have been delivered to the country, however only 15% of the vaccines have been accepted by the public. The low uptake forced Angela Merkel to intervene and urged Germans to take the inoculation. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also pleaded for people to take the Oxford vaccine.

The European Union has been hit by vaccine supply shortages and rows with manufacturers in recent months. The UK has jabbed over 18.6 million people so far, representing 28% of the entire population. The EU on the other hand has seen just 6% of its population inoculated.
