How to Understand Revelation prophecies) The church of Ephesus (201
IN the old testament sanctuary, the 7 lights on the golden lampstand in the sanctuary had to be cared for by the high priest every day. Leviticus 24:1-4
The high priest kept them clean, and added olive oil as needed.
Revelation 2:1 says that Jesus walks among the . . . lampstands. He is our contemporary high priest serving in the heavenly sanctuary. Hebrews 3:1 and Heb 8:1. He looks after our interests.
Today we are going to begin studying the 7 churches in Revelation. Ephesus is the church that abandoned its first love. Revelation 2:1-7
Ephesus was the principal city in the Roman province of Asia. It had a fine harbor and its location made it become a strong commercial center. It was a pagan religious center. Artemis, a many breasted goddess of fertility also known as Diana was worshipped there. Her magnificent temple was one of the 7 wonders of the world. The Christian church in Ephesus was founded by Aquila and Priscilla, the evangelist Apollos and the apostle Paul. Because so many people were converted and beleived in the true God and Jesus Christ, they stopped purchasing the silver sourvenirs of the goddess Artemis and the local silversmiths staged an anti-Christian riot. Acts 19:23-41. Years later, Paul warned the church that some of their own member would soon start teaching heresy. Act 20:29,30. In a letter he cautioned them, let no one deceive you with empty words. Do not associate with anyone who tries to do so. Ephesians 5:6,7.The Ephesians Christians accepted Paul's advice. Thirty years later, in the book of Revelation, Jesus commended them because they had "tested those who call themselves apostles but are not: and because they hated the works of the Nicolaitans, which Jesus added I also hate. Jesus also commended the Ephesians for their works, toil, and patient endurance. Revelation 2:2,6.
But who were the Nicolaitans? Irenaeus, a second century minister who grew up near Ephesus, wrote about them. The Nicolaitans claimed to be Christians but they continued to practice adultery and to eat things sacrificed to idols. The Nicolaitans were Christians who felt that faith in Jesus released them from obedience to some of the ten commandments. Jesus, in the Sermon on the mount preached that not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is i heaven. Matthew 7:21.
Jesus gave a rebuke to this church. He said I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Jesus considered this loss of love as a sin of the first magnitude. Remember then from what you have fallen, repent and do the works you did at first he pleaded. If not I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Jesus dealt tactfully but firmly with the church. He talked about thier good qualities first, then told them plainly about their bad ones. If a Christian church want to be a true light to the world, it has a responsibility to live love. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:35. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16.
The reward to the church is to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. The tree of life grew originally in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 2:8,9. Paradise is now in heaven. 2 Corinthians 12:2,3. This promise is for us. Some day we will eat from the tree of life and we will live forever.
