Press Release

Dear Gwen:

We are very glad that VOA expands broadcasts in Horn of Africa; however, it does not do justice to Somali people who inhabits in that part of the world.

Moreover, I do not think that VOA improves its programs while it left out the Somali ethnic who live in Djibouti, Somaliland, Somali Region of Ethiopia, Somalia and the North part of Kenya. In other words, these changes do not reflect inclusiveness and democratic principle of U.S which is working to sell its kind of democracy to the people of Horn of Africa. US needs Somali people in Horn of Africa to fight the terrorism.

For example, the recent election that has been held in Somali region was not covered properly from Somali Ethiopian perspective. The new director of Horn of Africa is doing an excellent job and improves the programs, but his hand are tied since he does not have enough resources to cover all Horn of Africa. During this election, a single Somali was not interviewed and on the contrary it reflected the view points of socalled opposition group, CUD, who are thinking to bring back the hegemony of Amhara ethnic. VOA has awarded and expanded the biased and distorted programs of Amahric language while neglecting the 25 millions Somalis who inhabit in Horn of Africa.

For instance, VOA’s Africa Division director, Gwen Dillard, says the changes are part of ongoing improvements to provide news, sports, features, entertainment and an exchange of ideas to the Horn of Africa. How on earth do you do justice if you do not allow Somalis to participate in the programs. The dictator regimes of Derg was forcing Somali to learn in Amahric; although,EPRDF, the current ruling party in Ethiopia, has changed and embarked the country in democratic and all inclusive way of life.

Further, you said that

"The time changes for Afan Oromo and Tigrigna and program enhancements for Amharic reflect VOA’s commitment to Africa, and particularly our commitment to the Horn of Africa” Ms. Dillard said. How on earth you committed to Horn of Africa while you do not single voice of Somali to participate in the programs.

I hope that you make an inclusive programs.

Thank you.
Ethiopian Somali Democratic Council

The changes mean that VOA’s Horn languages will now be broadcast in an uninterrupted, two-hour time block to accommodate listeners who want to hear news and programs in more than one language.
