Meles Says Yara Award Is Result of Struggle of Ethiopian Farmers

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the award he received from YARA Foundation for his outstanding contribution for enhancing green revolution is the result of the struggle of the Ethiopian farmers. Meles also said the prize of 200,000 USD he received from YARA will be used to enroll 550 destitute rural females in secondary schools.

Prime Minister Meles made the remark in Oslo, Norway while receiving the First Yara prize which was vested to him for his contribution to improved food security and human nutrition in environment friendly ways.

In a speech he delivered at the ceremony in the presence of prominent personalities such as Jeffrey Sachs, the top economic advisor to the United Nations Secretary General and other Yara Executives, Meles said he received the prize on behalf of farmers as it is a recognition for the efforts of the Ethiopian government to help create a green revolution in Africa.

He said agricultural productivity has been doubled over the past 15 years through the green revolution in Ethiopia.

Meles said the total crop production which was only 53 million quintals in 1983 E.C. has reached 119 million quintals in 1995/96 E.C.

The farmers in the country are being transformed into market-oriented farmers, he said.

The volume of oil seeds which was only one million quintals 10 years ago has now reached to over 5.3 million quintals, he added.

The Prime Minister said his government is striving to construct schools in rural parts of the country and build the capacity of the youth in education and training to further enhance the green revolution in Ethiopia.

He said his government would make famine history through the enhancement of agricultural development in the next five years.

Meles said the award he got "will help us Ethiopians to work hard more than ever before and change our country."

He said he decided that the 200,000 USD would be utilized for helping those female students who are unable to continue their secondary education.

Meles said the stated amount of money will help complete 550 destitute females students their secondary education if a 100 Birr monthly allowance is given to each.

Jeffrey Sachs and Thorleif Enger, Chairman of the Yara Foundation said on the occasion that Ethiopia under the leadership of Meles have attained a significant achievement in the agriculture sector.

They also expressed their beliefs that the award would help further enhance the efforts underway in Ethiopia to eliminate famine..

All of them knows that Meles is a man of honor who works hard for his country and selfless person, But they have failed to admit that. This is the most dangerous tendency for our country.

Selam! I have been questioning myself for so long to find out their exact demand. Yes, last election proved that their concern is sitting at NUBELIU BETEMENGIST. They are blind enough to see that they could make a lot more difference in the country even outside BETEMENGIST.
