On May 15, Ethiopian voted 49% Kinjit, 37% EPRDF, 17% Hebret, according to exit polling leaked from EU independent observers.
Ethiopians voted for Kinjit, with its "V" sign. The people relate to Kinjit. They relate to the leader of Kinjit, Ato Hailu Shawel. Kinjit and the "V" sign are important markers to the majority of the people that went to the polling booths on May 15, 2005.
Recently people sense the appearance of new names for the opposition including transitional government, provisional government, coalition government, etc. Whatever new modalities are selected Kinjit must make sure that name Kinjit appears at the heading of the new arrangement. Failure to include the name Kinjit will turn off the majority of people that supported it from being interested in the new arrangement. The creation of new names for the opposition has been implemented repeatedly in the past and has succeeded to defocus, weaken, and debilitate the opposition. The industry that generates the alphabet soup must be abandoned or turned off completely. Kinjit should insist that the name Kinjit should be placed in any and all coalition efforts it might be engaged in. Kinjit must also insist that the coalition must have a leader.
Another fear people have is that the Kinjit leadership will be taken over by well-known entities that have for years debilitated Ethiopia from liberating itself from the tyranny of ethnic-centered governance. The way out of the tyranny was believed to be a nonviolent movement conducted by the people and for the people. What people fear is that if Kinjit is not careful the nonviolent movement that the people started will be taken over by entities that will debilitate the people from acquiring freedom from tyranny. The purpose of a nonviolent movement is not for the leaders to seek positions in government nonviolently. The purpose of a nonviolent movement is to empower the people to peaceably govern themselves. Nonviolent movement takes time to achieve its goal. The leaders must know that and should guide the movement by jealously guarding against currents that will divert the effort to quick fix power sharing devices.
I now turn to the 5 Nehasse(12 August 2005) and 5 August 2005 press releases.
The 5 Nehese press release by Kinjit and Hebret is a proposal that they submitted to the EPRDF for its consideration. The proposal was worked out by Hebret. Earlier the proposal was made public in English on 5 May 2005 bearing the initials of Drs. Brehanu and Beyene. This proposal seeks power sharing with EPRDF, if the latter would accept, and was initially said to have not been accepted by Kinjit. Now, the Amharic version of the same proposal is apparently accepted and is given as a joint proposal by Hebret and Kinjit.[http://www.andenet.com/PR-CUD-UEDF-081205-Amh.pdf] The last I heard on German radio was Ato Ledetu stating that it was not accepted by Kinjit while Dr. Brehanu asserted that Ato Ledetu would not know that it was not accepted.
Particulars of the Heberte-Kinjit proposal
Articles 1 through III provide rationale and fear that the authors of the proposal state inorder to offer the suggestions of a new political arrangement conatined in Aricles IV and V.
Article IV states the main features of the new political arrangement. The arrangement has three parts:a) duration- limited only to the time to get a fair and just election. b) confidence building- develop and implement certain activities by the parties and the government, and 3) power sharing by parties- establishment a government that allows for power sharing by the parties.
Article 5 of the proposal thanks what it called "other major stakeholders" two of whom were identified. The first "other major stakeholder" is identified to be the Ethiopian people. The Ethiopians then are thanked for their effort to enable the proponents to do their thing. The Ethiopians are also asked to be patient so that this wonderful proposal will take hold. The other identified major stakeholder is the international community.
The last paragraph of the proposal includes the following.
"In conclusion, the main point of our proposal is to suggest a way out of the current political impass. We believe that the way out is to hold a meeting/conference of the EPRDF, CUD and UEDF, facilitated by a third party consisting of the international donor community and Ethiopian civic organizations." http://www.andenet.com/CUD-Proposal-0805-Eng.pdf
My reaction to the conclusion had been that it runs against the precepts of nonviolent movements aimed at liberating people from tyranny. I had also asked people to refer to the work of Gene Sharp on nonviolent movement.
Mulugeta,
A good leader comes with a great vision to unite and lead for the benefit of all its citizens. But you are one good example for all of us to see how Meles and his chorines are all about—you are trying so hard to cause chaos among ethnic groups, even Menegestu did not do that. He believed in one Ethiopia. Like some one has said in this forum—Ethiopians know who tortured and killed their children. How pathetic, you want to blame your own cruelty on some other ethnic groups. And yet you are the only ethnic group who has the total control of Ethiopia for the last fourteen years. You cannot hide, we know who the real criminals are. This shall also pass. Your legacy will be horrible.
