9 August 2005

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) today released official results for the Federal House of Peoples’ Representatives and State Councils in 492 of the 524 constituencies where elections took place on 15 May 2005. The Board has declared all results official except in 32 constituencies where re-run elections and a by-election will be conducted.

According to official results, the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has won 296 seats that would enable it to form the federal government. The Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) won 109 seats and the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF) got 52 seats. The Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM) gained 11 seats while the Benishangul Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Unity Front (BGPDUF) and the Afar National Democratic Part (ANDP) won 8 seats each. The Gambella Peoples’ Democratic Movement (GPDM) secured 3 seats while four other parties and an independent candidate won one seat each.
The NEBE also announced today the official results for 8 regional states and the Addis Ababa City Administration. The EPRDF has won elections in Amhara, Oromiya, SNNP and Tigray states by securing majority of votes in the assemblies of these sttaes. CUD has won 135 of 138 seats in the Addis Ababa City Administration council. ANDP won a majority of seats in the Afar state council. In Harari State, a coalition of parties with the highest votes shall form a government as there was no single party that won majority seats.

NEBE Chairman Kemal Bedri expressed his gratitude to the peoples of Ethiopia for their active participation in the elections and for their commendable patience in waiting for the final results. Kemal also called upon contending political parties to accept the final results. “The parties should accept the final official results which have come after an investigation process that was long, but was also transparent, participatory and the rules of which had been agreed to between the parties,” he said.

Ato Kemal also announced that out of the 178 investigated constituencies, the Board has ordered re-run elections in 31 of them. Re-run elections will also be held for 79 state council seats. The re-run elections will take place on 21 August 2005, the same date as federal and state council elections in the Somali state. These results will be announced on 5 September 2005.

The list of winners for federal seats as well as details on the breakdown for regional council seats is available from the NEBE Press & Public Information Unit and on the NEBE’s website (www.electionsethiopia.org).
