Somali State Chief Calls On Public to Register for Upcoming Election

Training offered for election executives

Chief of the Somali State, Abdi Jibril Abubekr called upon the public in the state to get registered and participate in the national and State Council elections due to be held in the state soon.

Speaking at a press conference here Sunday, Abdi Jibril urged the public to register and get voter IDs to cast their ballots for candidates capable of bringing about development and ensuring good governance.

The State's Chief said the administration has provided the necessary support in distributing election materials to 2,000 polling stations established in 51 woredas of the state.

According to Abdi, the state government has been playing its role in supporting the efforts being exerted for the democratic conduct of the election.

Meanwhile, the Jijjiga Election Office said it has offered a day-long training yesterday for Kebele election executives to be deployed in Jijjiga-1 and Jijjiga-2 Constituencies.

Office Coordinator, Wondwossen Demissie told ENA that election executives to be deployed in 36 election centres and 152 polling stations have attended the training.

The coordinator said orientations have been given on voters' registration procedures based on the manuals and regulations prepared by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).

He added education was also offered on the code of conduct to be observed by the election executives as well as on election timetable and other related issues.

He said more than 180,000 voters are expected to get registered in polling stations under Jijjiga-1 and Jijjiga-2 constituencies.

Similarly, Fafen Development, a local non-governmental organization announced that a three-day training aimed at agitating the public to take part in the forthcoming Somali State election is in progress.

Organization Director Tesfaye Melaku told ENA Sunday that some 50 participants drawn from various sections of the society were in attendance at the training.

The director said Basic Principles of Democracy, the Importance of Democratic Election, Constitution and Constitutionalism as well as Accountability are among the major topics of the training.

The organization has planned to provide similar trainings in Gode, Afder, Liben, Fiq, Wardder, Kebri-Dehar and Degehabour zones. Tesfaye added Electoral Reform International Services (ERIS) has provided financial support for the training.

The Somali Regional State president, Abdi Jibril Abubakar, has said the people and government of the regional state condemned the bomb attacks in Jijiga [in eastern Ethiopia] town and that the people and government of the regional state would not be cowed by terrorist provocations.

The head told Walta [Information Centre] that the bomb attacks targeting civilians were heinous acts of terrorists and the people and government of the regional state strongly condemned them.

He reiterated that the terrorist acts of anti-peace elements would not undermine the registration of voters that began today, saying the terrorists would gain nothing by killing innocent people.

The head vowed that the regional state government would hunt and bring to book the culprits, and urged the public to stand by its.

NEB also ordered re-election to be held in 90% of the regions where Zenawi and Co have said re-election should be held. All the woyane ministers, Bereket simon, Jenedine, etc who lost their seats previously are getting ready to come back. What about that for a double whammy?
