STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

PASTED FROM ETHIOMEDIA.COM

CUD never breaks its words
July 19, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On behalf of The Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), I would like to inform the CUD members, supporters and the public at large that CUD is committed to bring the May 15, 2005 election to its end in a peaceful, transparent and democratic manner.
To achieve this CUD has entered into agreements with the ruling party and NEB several times. Since the last agreement the NEB and EPRDF has violated all the major points in the agreements and have continued rigging the peoples vote. The killing, harassments and detaining of the opposition members, witnesses, supporters and the Ethiopian people has been intensified since we signed these agreements. The ruling party have made the situation more unattainable than ever. Because of these reasons CUD is considering to take an appropriate action to the current situation so that all concerned parties to respect the peoples vote and the rule of law.

Currently CUD is evaluating different solutions and will present its decision in a few days time and inform the public in proper channels. I will reassure our members, supporters and the Ethiopian people at large that CUD has and will never bring the peoples vote on the negotiation table. Therefore, on behalf of CUD, I would like to ask the public to patiently wait for the CUD information and not to be confused by different kinds of rumours spreading through different medias.

Sincerely,

Getachew Wanna
Vice Foreign Relations Officer
UEDP-MEDHIN/CUD

hERE you go again CUD ready for bloody mess, well time will tell us who is gone to pay the price if they do so.

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

lema,
CUD did not shoot anybody. The blame goes to Meles. Why don't get it in your little brain.

You can slice it any way you want but the Ethiopian people have lived with Meles for 14 miserable years, they hate the sun of b.. Votes from Woyanes and a few Tigrays are not enough for Meles to win an election. They are doing everything they can to make it look like it is a legitimate win and rule Ethiopia for five more years with iron fist while Meles builds his empire in Mekelae. My predication is after he gets what he wanted he will divide Ethiopia in pieces.

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

TO KIFU!

YOU SAID,"My predication is after he gets what he wanted he will divide Ethiopia in pieces."

HAD MELES HAVE A DESIRE TO DIVIDE THE COUNTRY IN PIECES, HE COULD HAVE DONE IT IN THE LAST 14 YEARS. YOUR ILL WISH IS NOTHING MORE THAN A DRY LEAF THAT WANDERS WHEN WINDED.

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

CORRECTION:-

YOUR ILL WISH IS LIKE A DRY LEAF THAT WANDERS AND DISAPPEAR WHEN IT IS WINDED.

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

G/Meles,
Meles had already started by dividing Ethiopians by Ethnic regions, and made himself the only leader so he can steal from seventy million people. After five years he will give his crown to another ethnic group. Meles doesn’t have the best interest for Ethiopia. He has shown his hates towards Ethiopian people in more ways than one. I think right now Meles and his gangs dream is to be billionaires. It will take them five more years to accomplish their goals while the Ethiopian people are dying of hunger and diseases.

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

Mr/Ms. Kifu!

Are you in state of witch craft? Congratulation!

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

GebreMeles,

Grow up and be a real person. Can't you read and understand what you pasted here? Because you can't swallow the reality, Meles and your likes are continuing to change the truth to manipulate as it suits you. What you and your bosses are doing is a day light rip off. Ethnic divide and rule is ignorance. Not respecting the peoples' wish is another. Ethiopians are aware of what Meles and his pets are up to. Focus and do the right thing. There is still time. And we Ethiopians are forgiving; we know how to live together despite our differences and ethnic backgrounds (which is our jewel). We have done it before and will do it again.

God bless Ethiopia!

You said, "And we Ethiopians are forgiving"

WHO IS ETHIOPIAN AND WHO IS NOT?

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

GebreMeles,

Ethiopia is a nation of multiple ethnicities. Every ethnic group is equal. No one is superior or inferior. And every single person with its unique and wonderful ethnic background is an Ethiopian. However, in my opinion, anyone who wants/wishes the death of his fellow Ethiopian because of his/her different ethnic background shouldn’t consider him/herself an Ethiopian. Also any group of people (even a government) or individual who seeks the fall of this great nation of ours is not an Ethiopian too. When I said “… we Ethiopians are forgiving; we know how to live together despite our differences and ethnic backgrounds …,” I wanted to emphasize that our tolerance and respect to each other is a long standing and a well known fact among ourselves as well as outsiders. Don’t you agree?

God bless Ethiopia!

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY

By Dagnatchew Abate

When political parties put the gaining of power over principle, and elevate opportunism to the level of ideology, they will inevitably end up with strange bed fellows.

The coalition of forces in the CUD and UEDF comprises people who support federalism and those who bitterly oppose it, those who support the state ownership of land with those who would sell it off, along with virtually everything else.

There are those imprisoned by the Dergue, and those who imprisoned them. The wife of CUD leader Ato Hailu Shawel is the grand daughter of the late Emperor Haile Selassie, but that does not stop Ato Hailu cosying up with Professor Mesfin Wolde Mariam, one of the people who back in November 1974, signed the death warrants of the 61 Ministers of the imperial regime, including the relatives of Ato Hailu’s wife.

And now we are being treated to the bizarre spectacle of these disparate bedfellows being joined by the macho, Supreme Leader of Eritrea, President Issayas Afeworki.

Some have suggested that the propaganda voice of the Sha’ebia regime, Dimtsi Hafash (Voice of the Masses), should now be renamed Dimtsi Qinijit (Voice of the CUD). Dimtsi Hafash, radio and TV, initially totally ignored the elections in Ethiopia. After all, commenting on the elections might raise the question, “why not here?” (Eritrea, previously lionized by foreign journalists as the most democratic country in Africa, largely because that was what they were told, and because President Issayas wore short sleeve shirts and plastic sandals and drove a Volkswagon Beetle, has yet to hold an election of any kind.)

But eventually the temptation to sound off became too great. Every day CUD leaders were attacking the election process and the Ethiopian government. It was not long before the news on Dimtsi Hafash started to carry these reports, in great detail. CUD and Sha’ebia militants in the diaspora found that they had a lot in common, and virtually arm in arm, marched to lobby G8 leaders to stop aid to Ethiopia.

On one level, these developments could be seen as the theatre of the absurd. After all, it was the shrill propaganda of people like Professor Mesfin, “death to the bandits, crush the secessionists” which fuelled the Dergue’s hard line policies in Eritrea, leading inevitably to the hardening of separatist sentiment.

It is worth remembering that after the overthrow of the Emperor, General Aman Andom travelled to Asmara and received a great welcome there from all sections of society, with his proposals for freedom and regional autonomy.

For the Dergue, and that includes former Dergue members now in CUD, that was going too far, and General Aman paid for his “mistake” with his life, when Dergue tanks obliterated his home, with him inside, in November 1974. The Dergue’s subsequent scorched earth policies in Eritrea ensured that Eritrean opinion, hitherto spit, shifted towards independence.

When Mengistu fled to Zimbabwe in May 1991, many of the current CUD luminaries called for a continuation of the war in Eritrea, not by themselves of course, but by the readily available, and less valuable, Ethiopian peasants who could be conscripted and sent north to fight.

At that time the Sha’ebia controlled Eritrea, including the port of Assab, and everyone was tired of fighting. President Issayas was making reasonable noises, talking about the possibility of future federation with Ethiopia.

The ambitions of Eritrea’s ruling clique to control the Ethiopian economy eventually lead them to war – when Sha’ebia launched the invasion in May 1998 Eritrean leaders such Haile Wolde Tensae boasted that they would be in Addis Ababa in 2 weeks, and the problem for them was not the ousting of the EPRDF, but what and whom they would put in its place.

They were convinced that the federal arrangement in Ethiopia, the loosening of central control and opening up of politics meant that the country was hopelessly weakened, and only a small push was needed to bring about disintegration.

They had a rude awakening when they saw Ethiopia’s different ethnicities and regions come together to reverse the aggression.

It now seems that Sha’ebia is making the same miscalculation, that Ethiopia is divided and weakened by events following the May election. The fundamental difference this time, from May 1998, is that Issayas is being encouraged by forces within Ethiopia itself.

Addis Zena, owned lock stock and barrel by the founders of CUD, including Professor Mesfin, Hailu Shawel et al (this information is publicly available) recently printed a story that the 7th and 10th Corps had mutinied, and would no longer take orders from the current government.

So while at one level the spectacle of President Issayas clambering into bed with the CUD borders on farce, on another level, in so far as he is being invited by Ethiopian citizens, it comes exceedingly close to treason.

CUD is sending out the message that Ethiopia can no longer rely on its armed forces, and in doing so is sending out an invitation – “come in and do what you failed to do in 1998.”

The hope being that after the defeat of the Ethiopian forces, conditions would be ripe for CUD to seize power.

The greed for power is blinding the CUD leaders to the truth which escaped Sha’ebia back in 1998 – whatever differences Ethiopians may have among themselves, they are very quickly set aside in the face of external aggression.

The danger, and potential for tragedy, that CUD’s ploy inevitably entails is that in discovering this truth about Ethiopia, many Eritreans and Ethiopians will die, there will be huge material losses, and development in both countries will be set back at least a decade.

We have already heard CUD leaders calling for an end of aid to Ethiopia. What price are they willing to pay to gain power?

The answer, in light of these latest developments, is clearly “any price”.

Re: STILL UCD IS IN STATE OF BEWILDERMENT!

Mr. Dagnatchew you have a lot of enunciations here,
Your article looks to extrapolate, and expound Mulugeta’s articles in which he enunciates
Ethiopian diasporas(Derg luminaries according to Mulugeta) who oppose and demonstrate against woyane are conspiring with EPLF to disintegrate Ethiopia.
First Ato Hailu Shawel was a highly regarded executive in (Previously Dutch owned) wonji sugar mills management and he was selected as a technical person because of merits but not as a politician to manage government owned state farms with a ministerial rank. You can easily find a lot of innocent people who worked as technocrats for the government and also lost family by the derg including Tigreans and Eritrean’s because the government was the only employer. Ato Hailu as he said In BBC tried to bring a change like Boris Yelsin in USSR from within and finally saw the evil derg in the eye and said this is not just and right I am going resign. Pro Mesifin did not sign the death warrants of the 61 Ministers of the imperial regime, in November 1974, because he would be in jail by now. The so called death warrant that was used as evidence by EPDRF to charge DERG prisoners did not have his signature and I wonder how kids in north America would let you get away with that.
You said “Every day CUD leaders were attacking the election process and the Ethiopian government. It was not long before the news on (Eritrean) Dimtsi Hafash started to carry these reports, in great detail. CUD and Sha’ebia militants in the diaspora found that they had a lot in common, and virtually arm in arm, marched to lobby G8 leaders to stop aid to Ethiopia.”
I will tell we Ethiopians in Diaspora have nothing in common with EPLF. First, we are saying Meles himself is letting his Eritrean cousins win in U.N politics after we won the war in Badame. Meles was advised by many but never raised the issue of Assab in UN as the Afar people (which I proudly say are with the opposition in UEDF as ARDU) are demanding the return their stolen land by Eritrea. The Opposition is standing for the people of Afar and to the restoration of our millitaries victory. Either you are confused or spinning.

You said “CUD is sending out the message that Ethiopia can no longer rely on its armed forces, and in doing so is sending out an invitation – “come in and do what you failed to do in 1998.”
I do not know if you were hibernating in 1998 don’t you remember when Meles kept low profile and was begging Issayas to stop the invasion, true fighter like Samora and Seye emerged. CUD as well as UEDF is saying Meles leadership failed us.

You said “We have already heard CUD leaders calling for an end of aid to Ethiopia. What price are they willing to pay to gain power? “

This is another spin. The campaign says do not give any money to Meles directly but to projects that can be audited because he is not accountable as it is evident in this election. You should have called this article like Al Franken’s book “Liars and the lying liars who tell them”
