Tigray State Council Members Request Close Watch On Oppositions' Activities

Members of the Tigray State Council requested the government to closely watch the activities of opposition parties which, they said, is aimed at dismantling the unity of nations and nationalities which is built upon the Federal Constitution.

The Council has endorsed the state's 1998 E.C. budget.

In a resolution they passed at the conclusion of the 12th regular session of the Council late Sunday, the members lauded the process of the May 15 national election as legitimate and democratic.

Members of the Council called on opposition parties to refrain from activities and campaigns which they described as "anti-people".

The State's Council has approved over 840 million birr as the capital and regular budget of the administration for the 1998 Ethiopian fiscal year.

Members of the council have thoroughly discussed the draft budget submitted by the State's Finance and Economic Development Bureau.

Out of the approved budget, 223,669,200 birr was set aside as a regular budget, while 108,561,800 birr was allotted as capital budget.

Moreover, some 390.7 million birr has been allocated for rural woredas, while 118 million birr is set aside for urban centres, Head of the State's Finance and Economic Development Bureau, Mekonnen Abreha said.

The budget allotted would be secured from revenues collected by the State Administration, Federal Government subsidy as well as from foreign aid, it was indicated.

The Council has also allocated 10 million birr for the undertaking of the construction of a stadium in Makalle town.
