As a last resort to prolong his stay in power, Meles is implementing his plan of Interhamwe in Ethiopia. The most recent sign of such a move is the announcement by Junedin Sado, Meles Zenawi's chief puppet in Oromiya, that Addis Ababa will be the capital city of Oromiya. Under the existing constitution, Addis Ababa has self-governing status as the seat of the Federal Government.

If Ethiopians of the Oromo ethnic group would like to have Addis Ababa as the capital of Oromiya, it can be done democratically through a constitutional amendment. The concern is not whether Addis Ababa will lose its self-governing status. It is obvious that Ato Junedin made this announcement, at this particular time, to tell the people of Addis Ababa that "if Meles goes out, the Oromos are coming to rule over you." He's being used by Meles in his cynical attempt to scare the residents of Addis Ababa. In thinking that, Meles and his puppet, Junedin, are showing their utter contempt for the Oromo people and for the residents of Addis Ababa.

Since the Oromos are the majority, they have the right to govern not only Addis Ababa, but the whole of Ethiopia. The only one who comes between the Oromos and their right, as a majority, to govern Ethiopia is Meles Zenawi's ethnic apartheid policy that confines the Oromos to only the region he allocated for them. Unlike Ato Junedin, other Oromos who are respected among the people are struggling for one man, one vote democracy in Ethiopia.

Junedin Sado is despised by every Oromo organization that is not associated with EPRDF, including the Oromo Liberation Front. The May 15 elections have also demonstrated that he doesn't have a following among the Oromo people. His party, OPDO, suffered a great loss at the elections.

Ato Junedin is known for spewing ethnic hatred. In a speech he gave on May 8, 2005, for example, he said to a large gathering: "the breast and hand mutilations carried out on the Arssi Anole Oromos during the chauvinistic Neftegna system would never fade from the minds of the Oromo people... A memorial monument would be erected in Eteya town soon to commemorate the martyrs of Arssi Anole war during the reign of Emperor Menelik II."

"Chauvinistic Neftegna" are code words for Amharas and Tigreans in the EPRDF dictionary.

This is how Meles Zenawi and his "Colonel Bagosora" are preparing the grounds for "Interhamwe" in Ethiopia.

While engaging in this kind of vile ethnic politics, Meles turns around and tell the international community that the opposition parties will lead the country to "Interhamwe."

Even though "Interhamwe" at the scale that occurred in Rwanda is unlikely in Ethiopia, for the past 14 years, Meles Zenawi and his cadres have been fostering enough ethnic hatred throughout the country to cause harm.

If the opposition political parties and concerned Ethiopians, in general, do not address this issue right now, Meles may succeed in using his "Interhamwe" card to cause a great deal of devastation in our country.

To fight off this evil, the opposition parties, religious leaders, civic groups and others need to take proactive measures. The following are some suggestions:

1) Hold town hall meetings and dialogues through out the country to promote harmony and unity among Ethiopia's ethnic groups.
2) Issue statements condemning the attempts by Meles Zenawi and his cadres to incite ethnic conflicts.
3) Give clear warnings to individuals like Junedin that if he continues to engage in fomenting ethnic hatred and causes death and destruction, he will face justice.
4) Religious leaders from all faiths and ethnic backgrounds need to come together and pray for unity and harmony.
5) Every Ethiopian must vigorously discourage any form of ethnic slur any where at any time. Any individual who engages in this kind of behavior is knowingly or unknowingly advancing Meles Zenawi's sinister plan.

By taking such proactive measures, Meles Zenawi's ultimate weapon of mass destruction he planned for our country will be neutralized.

He knows nothing except the fact that he is under the order of Meles. He can not visit bath room in the absence of permission from Meles. So why are we people wonder about him? My Lord,

I HAVE the honour to transmit herewith to your Lordship copies of reports made by Major Darley and Major Athill on slavery in the south-western provinces through which they passed on their way to Maji. Each composed his report separately without comparing notes while doing so.

I further enclose (Enclosure No. 3) a memorandum written by Mr. Walker, His Majesty's consul at Gore, on slave traffic in general in Abyssinia.

These records of wholesale devastation of rich provinces, formerly thickly populated, cannot fail to make an impression and to create feelings of pity for the wretched inhabitants of the territories conquered by the Amharas. These districts are just as much Amhara colonies as German East Africa was a German colony, and the wanton outrages perpetrated therein surpass anything he Germans have done or that has happened since Tippu Tib and his kind pursued their nefarious trade in Central Africa.

A proclamation was made in or about November 1918 abolishing the slave traffic in Abyssinia, but such proclamations are merely intended to blind the eyes et the Europeans in the capital. In the provinces it is as bad as ever, and every chief leaving his district collects as many men, women, and children as he can to line his purse in case he is not given another post. In April last Dejaz Kabada, Governor of Gore, who was threatened with dismissal, telephoned from Adis [sic] Ababa to a friend, Fitaurari Gabri, Governor of Gimirra, to collect all the "honey" he could and send it to the capital before the rains, "honey" being a code word for slaves. Fitaurari Gabri collected between 500 and 1,000 people and despatched [sic] them by various routes, but I do not know whether they ever reached Adis [sic] Ababa, as they are usually snapped up eagerly on the way.

Thus the traffic continues, and then, is little chance for the victims unless or until one of two things happen. The first is the exhaustion of the districts where the raids principally take place - Sidamo, Kaffa, Mossongo, Gimirra, Mau, Anuak, Nuer, and Beni Shangul, by which means the traffic will automatically cease on account of depopulation; the second is the intervention of the Powers. I am told that since the armistice the price of slaves in Adis [sic] Ababa has fallen by some 60 per cent. Formerly a slave was a good investment; now buyers are shy, for they know full well that the practice is a shame and a disgrace in a world which boasts a League of Nations, and they realise that an end will be put thereto if an enlightened administration is ever established in Abyssinia.

Is it too much to hope that the Abyssinians will not be given the opportunity to lull themselves again into security, and that the price of slaves will never rise again to its former level? In the name of humanity some action would seem essential to rid one of the fairest countries in Africa of this scourge and I venture to submit that if no more drastic course is possible for the moment, at least all importation of arms and ammunition and of raw materials for the manufacture thereof should be strictly prohibited until slavery has ceased to exist and the Powers have been accorded full opportunity of ascertaining that such is really the case.

Memorandum by Major Darley on the Slavery Question in Abyssinia.

TO write calmly on the slavery question in Abyssinia, and in particular of the district from Jimma to Maji and even in British territory, is difficult for any white man, and particularly so for any one who has known the country before the death of Menelik.

This district comprises the countries of Kaffa, Gimoera, [sic] Tishanna, Maji, Kanta, and Tlrma. The people inhabiting these countries were very numerous, and cultivated in a large way, besides owning large herds of cattle and a certain number of sheep and goats.

The system under which this large district was administered by the Abyssinians was as follows :-

The natives were called "gubbar," or serfs, and were not allowed to be sold off the land. On an Abyssinian chief taking over his allotted district these serfs were divided up among his adherents on the well-known system that--

"Great big fleas have smaller fleas
Which prey upon and bite 'em,
And smaller fleas have lesser fleas,
And so ad infinitum,"

with the notable exception that here the smaller and lesser fleas keep the big ones. They grew all the food for their masters, did all their house-work, [sic] and besides were compelled to pay a changeable number of dollars yearly to their masters. To such an extent was this system carried on that the women of these gubbar were always used as concubines by their masters. I myself on arriving in this territory from the desert with my men, who had not seen a woman for months, was quite accustomed to seeing droves of these women being brought to my men for their delectation. On these occasions a dollar was paid to the Abyssinian and a cartridge to the woman; sometimes less, but never more. This used to occur before the death of Menelik, when the gubbar were comparatively well-used. You will realise, therefore, that this system is slavery personified.

Since the death of Menelik, Ras Walda Giorgis, who governed the country, has been removed, and several small chiefs have taken his place and are constantly being changed. Each chief on being removed from his district makes as clean a sweep as possible of all its inhabitants, and carries them off mostly for sale. The chief market is in Jimma, at Mindara I myself saw a drove of children brought into the market­place at Jimma, where they were handed over to other merchants by their escort. I also saw a drove of seventy of these unfortunates marching along the road before arriving in Jimma. The men were chained together. The women walking and carrying children. Several of them were children so small that one would not think they had any value. This I saw in 1918, but where they were captured from I have no idea. In 1912 I saw droves of these unfortunates driven through Jimma. One drove took three days to pass my house. Little children unable to walk, three or four abreast, tied on a mule. Ten dollars a head and take your choice. The result you can imagine.

The whole country of which I am writing has been completely depopulated. Stone roads can be seen leading from nowhere to nowhere [sic]. Mountains terraced from the bottom to the top for cultivation have still the terraces to show, but no people.

The price of slaves has fallen to such an extent that 5 to 10 dollars is the average. Trade has ceased to exist, except the slave trade, in which every man is interested. The custom-houses [sic] charge 1 dollar a head for the passage of each slave.

The country is desolate except for bands of robbers and murderers perched on hilltops. Food is unprocurable. The age of each successive raid can be easily gathered by the height of the bush on former homesteads.

The Abyssinians have no food, and to get it they must go further and further afield. This means British territory.

We have just marched from the border - eighteen days' march - without seeing a soul. All have been exterminated or have fled.

What the end is I cannot see; but if slavery, murder, and robbery is [sic] not the present day law of nations, let there be an international commission to see this unhappy district. The natives were friendly to any white man and numbers were my personal friends, so I may be excused if I write feelingly.

Memorandum by Major Athill on Slavery in South-Western Abyssinia.

The following memorandum is confined to evidence personally seen and heard on a journey by the main road from Adis [sic] Ababa to the south-western frontier.

The first evidence of actual trade in slaves was seen at Jimma. Here we saw a party of about twenty small boys brought to the market-place [sic] in broad daylight and sold within half-an-hour [sic]. The Galla merchants' quarter exists practically for the slave traffic alone. Visiting it one night, I asked a Galla, who perhaps took me for a trader, what slaves he had. He said that he had none for sale at the moment, but that if' I would come to his neighbour’s house I could buy plenty. Unfortunately my servant gave me away before I could find out any more. The trade, though usually carried in private houses, is a perfectly open one.
Immediately on crossing the Gojeb River the results of the slave trade are obvious. The traces of a close cultivation by a large and industrious population are unmistakable. Today the country is without sign of life except for a few settlements of Abyssinian soldiers, whose fields are cultivated by slave labour. Comparative peace reigns, except for wandering bands of robbers, as the clearinghouse process is complete. On the road through this country we met a convoy guarded by Abyssinians and consisting of about seventy women and children, newly captured. A few, too small or weak to walk, were loaded on mules. Children of 4 years of age were being driven along on foot.
At Shiwa [sic] Ghimirrha [sic] we found a hotbed of slavery. The Abyssinian chief was daily expecting to be replaced, and was therefore selling the native population as quickly as possible. A well-grown boy cost 10 dollars, a small one five dollars. Apart from the chiefs operations, there were about 100 freebooters living in the village, catching slaves on their own behalf. So lawless was the situation here that a chief, visiting our camp, one mile from the village, said that he dared not send his small slave boy back to the village alone, as he would certainly be stolen on the way.
In the district of Bashuma, next passed through, the chief was also waiting to be removed. When called upon to send Government mails back to Jimma for us, he at first refused, unless we could get from the senior Abyssinian Commissioner with us a letter, which would enable him to pass a convoy of slaves, through with the mails. In this country the natives had risen against the Abyssinians as a result of slave-raiding [sic]. Only strong armed parties could move about, outlying settlements had been burnt, and charred corpses were lying in the still smouldering [sic] ruins. All cultivation was abandoned. A few starving old women still lay in the native houses, kept alive by their men who had taken to the bush, and crept back at night with roots, &c. [sic] One of these women told me that her entire family of six children been carried off.
The attitude of' the Abyssinian towards slaves was welt illustrated here. The three Abyssinian Commissioners, one of whom was noted for his humane tendencies, accompanied by over 400 men, filed past a small boy sitting by the roadside in the last stages of starvation. Not one of them offered him a drop of water or a morsel of bread. When we picked him up we were told that we were wasting our time, as he was a cripple and would never be any good.
The province of Maji again showed the devastating effects of the slave trade traffic. Huge expanses of hillside had in the past been terraced - a work which could only have been done by a large and hard working population. Standing on the edge of the escarpment, one saw these terraced lands stretching down into the valleys, which, in turn, were dotted with the circles of stones on which the local native builds his house. Of houses themselves, of crops on the terraces, or of population, in many directions no trace was left. In others, an occasional patch of cultivation would break the surrounding waste of deserted fields
Carefully shepherded as we were by the Abyssinians, it was natural that the grosser violences [sic] of the slave trade did not come under our personal observation. No shepherding, however, could hide the fact that south-western Abyssinia, the richest and most beautiful country in Africa, through Abyssinian rapacity, has been converted, where a struggling population still survives, into a hell, and, where the work of the raider is complete into a splendid wilderness. With the depopulation of successive areas, slaving operations are pushed further afield, and already a strip of the Southern Soudan, [sic] 50 miles wide at its narrowest, has become a happy hunting ground for Abyssinian slave raiders.
What the final result will be is impossible to imagine, but the existing conditions, of which only clearly-established [sic] instances have here been quoted, are revolting and almost indescribable.

As an Oromo Natinalist, I don't see a conflict with being proud Oromo and proud Ethiopian. Yes, it is important that the Oromo get its rightful place with other nationals in leading the multi-national population of Ethiopia. I call on OLF leaders and other opposition leaders including from Tegrai to come together at this critical time to avert the genocide Melese Zenawi is preparing. We Oromos will never forget what TPLF did 14 years ago to the genuine Oromo nationalist movement only to disarm 20,000 oromo fighters and sent them to concentration camps. Since then TPLF has been killing our people in thousands. OLF and its supporters should refuse to once again be fooled by TPLF into playing this dirty and dangerous game.
I think the Oromo people are too wise to accept Meles' gift of Finfine as our capital city. We don't need his gift. It is too little too late !!!

it is strange and unbelivable to talk about interhamwe between the people of ethiopia, since we all ethiopians are mixed in blood. for example, i have a father of amhara and a mother of tigre. my brother married to an orromo girl and one of my sister is married to a man from south. all the family is happy about this combination and the ethnic isue is forgotten in our family. how can interhamwe be applicable to this combination of people? please, Ato Meles don't torrorize the ethiopian people.

I think you did not get the point of the article. The moral of the story is not about restoring power of Amharas on us (Oromos). For that matter, we have never been rulled. I would add the following to your suggestions:

Call for EPRDF members to act against Meles' Interhamwe agenda. EPRDF seems lost its internal democracy as key decisions are taken without consultation and consensus. I believe that there are a lot of EPRDF members who don't agree with Meles' Interhamwe agenda and would act against it....

We have known all along that ethnic politics at its lowest leads to extreemism such as interhawe frenzy. We also knew that the moment EPRDF accused its political opponents for this kind of monsterous activity, it is planting the seed of evil and that the number one perpetrator and instigator of such activities would be no one other than EPRDF itself. It was only a matter of time.

Last Monday was the beginning of EPRDF's interhawe. It killed unarmed people and school chidren. it has put demonstrators and opposition supporter in prison, attacked all and everyone who did not vote for it. it targeted ethnic groups in some regions. It used the media to incite people to fight against each other. It is moving OPDO to addis ababa to spill the blood. this is a grand sinister interhawe sckeme.

This is also the time for all Ethiopians abroad to stand up and condemn this plan. Please call or contact all community leaders (ethnic, religious, human rights group and all) in your cities for a meeting and organisation.I recommend all ethiopians abroad to come together and form ONE organistion to fight this mad man.

There are people from almost every ethnic groups believing in Christianity and as well as in Islam. At this moment those criminals are aggravating about the problem regarding ethnicity that is not there as they think off. How many millions of Ethiopians are in the country who have fathers and mothers from different groups. What you are going to do about them. They are millions. But you are part of from few criminals. Brave people like gurage, keffa, kembata, hadya, harere, and many others are the true Ethiopians who want to be part of Ethiopia not with these unknown oromis. Addis Ababa is created and built to be the capital city of all Ethiopians not to one group. Addis Ababa is the city of free people from ethnic or religion sickness. The present and future of Addis Ababa is no decided by few criminals but by all Ethiopian especially by its 5 millions residents. Addis Ababa is the birth place of many Tigrians, amharas, oromos, gurages, sidamans, afars, kembatas, hadias ---. So stop even from thinking that the free people of Addis Ababa would be administrated by one group. Many people of the world are speaking English just to communicate. We all are the same. Only very few among us are bad. They don't like when there is peace and love among us. So, we have to denounce them. Ethiopia is for Ethiopia. What Ethiopia has is for all Ethiopia. Every one must have the right to work, live, associate and be free everywhere in the country. Division the population among ethnic or religion line will not be the another in a short as well as long term. Tigrai, Amhara, oromo, kefafa, harere, sidama, kembata, hadia, afar, ogaden,,, all are for one Ethiopia and ethiopia is for all of them in equal basis.

Junedin, if you have been doing studies for the last three to four years whether Finfine should be the capital of Oromiya or not, what made you decide to build such an explended multi million palace on the top of a hill at Adama?.What made you change your mind now? Is it your boss Meles Zenawi? or has he as usual ordered you to create an attention diverting agenda so that he continues messing up the May 15 election process.Why didnt you use the multi million you spent on building a palace you didnt decide to reside in,to buy food, medicines, etc for the millions of Oromos suffering from disease, starvation. Interhamwe? They will try anything against the whole Ethiopian people not to lose the position and wealth they illegally have. They are now in a position unable even to breath. The amharas are the result of all Ethiopian people as I do. As I said my mother is a Tirian origin. My father is from Amhara. So who am I? I’m just an Ethiopian free from Ethnic and religion separatism. I accept all who accept me who I’m. Not because of my ethnic or religion background. For example I knew some individuals have different kinds of ethnic back ground. Who are they then according to melese and his associates? All of them I know are true Ethiopians. If they force to choose their ethnic they are Amharas. They are the free people of Ethiopia. They don't believe in ethnic or religion but freedom, love and equality. So, about the TPLF Creation of Amhara as an ethnic group will be explained the truth by true people not by criminals who went to valleys to take power after hunting people and destroying property. The free people of Ethiopia must unite. As I do there are millions who don't want even to hear the woyane ethnic policy for bad purpose. All ethnic and religion members should focus on one thing, i.e. One Ethiopia and Ethiopian people. The current inclination won't bring us any good; we've already learned from our past.

Regarding, the authors suggestion about meetings and so on here in Ethiopia; It would be very difficult, as the government continued arresting people for no reason. Every day, hundreds of people are taken to detention camps. The international community here seems not to react at all. The number of Ethiopians that are murdered are much more than 26, but nobody seems to care to give the actual figure. Lots of open public harrassements in different parts of Ethiopia are continuing. Now the prisonors are not only students, but other civilians too. It's not safe at all to walk on Addis roads these days. If the agaazi evil eyes pick you, you definetly will be taken and tortured or shot dead. People in their detention camps starve, becuse they don't give them food for days. Considering the current season, if this continues some kind of epidemic might rise and lots will die of nothing else, but diseases (like cholera; TB). The signature made by the three parties doesn't mean anything for EPRDF as it continued harrassing people and even the opposition leaders.

Ethiopians should unite once for all not for the support of an oppostion party, but in support of our nation. The term "neftegna" I'm sure is outdated from people's mind; except for Meles & co.

Take care of your responses. It is clear that the decision made by OPDO is the last attempt to save TPLF. But I do not understand as some say, it can be a step for `'Interhamwe',. Some try to explain that it may creat a conflict between the Oromos and Amharas. But I do not understand and believe that. For one thing Finfinne is not in Amhara region. Secondly, the residents of Finfinne are from all nations and nationalities of the country. Why should the Oromos isolate and attach Amharas? Secondly, although the attempt is to win support for the TPLF/EPRDF from Oromos, it is the right decision. The question is why now and whether it meets the intended goal. For the Oromos, this is only one thing among hundreds of issues to be addressed. WE (Oromos) are fighting all over not only for Finfinne, but for Oromia and for other people under Woyane's opperession. We still demand the immediate release of thousandes of Oromos suffering in Woyane jails for years without charge. We do not consider the current move as a 'gift' from Woyane, but as a fruit of our bitter straggle for which we shade our blood. Therefore, my advise to all Oromos remember Finfinne as our natural property, just because it is in the heart of Oromia and not to give any credit to modern Gobenas. Other nations and nationalisties including Amhara or Tigre should not consider Oromo as a threat to their well being be it in Finfinne or any where else. I think, if you think, Finfinne belongs to you, I do not have problem, as long as you are Ethiopian, because Finfinne is the capital of Ethiopia. The issue of Fifinee is brought in to play by Meles using the robots in OPDO like Junedin to cling to power by creating artificial tension between the two major nationalities (Oromos and Amharas).
Their should be no objection from any quarter on the issue of Finfinee becoming the capital of Oromia. That would be playing in to the hands of Meles. Finfinee was the capital of Oromia for 10 years in the past 1993-2003 and there has never been a problem. It was junedin and Co. that moved it to Adama. If OPDO's want to come back let them. That changes nothing for any one.
Junedin is trying to play "ine kemotku serdo ayibiqel". He wants to revenge on the Oromos that rejected him by creating havoc in their region on the one hand and is trying to sell him self as a genuine Oromo nationalist to get sympathy from mainstream Oromo nationalists in OLF. His third eye fixed on geting his master's order in place. Junedin and OPDO are a disgrace to the Oromo people.
Junedin has lost the mandate to speak on behalf of the Oromos. The Oromos in Iteya have unequivocally rejected him. So who is he to speak for the Oromos?
He has to face justice for the killings, torture, mass dismissal of Oromo students from AAU and the banning of the Matchaa and Tulamaa oromo self help civic association.
He has no mandate what so ever to decide where the capital city of Oromia should be. The oromo people will decide freely when the TPLF and their stooges are dislodged out of Oromia.
Ethiopia belongs to all of us Oromo, Amhara, Tigre, Sidama, Gurage etc. Lets get united to dislodge tyrants so that we can have the liberty to freely decide what suites us best.

I think it has been clear for sometime that Meles is against Ethiopian people. What I saw today is, very interesting opinion about the rule of law (internationl law) at the Haig in Holland. If the ex-Yugoslavin leader is accountable to that court why not Meles Zenawi and his colaborators? If you have seen Hotel Ruwanda and how that single person was able to instil a sense of responsibility/fear and accountability in those military leaders was very deterimental in his ability to save and spare some peoples life. If Meles and co. start to realize that they are going to be held accountable to their murderous rampage in broad daylight in the Capital City of Africa - Addis, sooner or later some of his collaborators will start leaving him to ask asylum in Chaina and North Korea. For that we Ethiopians have to work hand in hand with the international organizations to bring these Ethiopia haters/criminals to justice. In order to do that we've to be very disciplined and calm. We have to show this brain washed by Meles leaders like Tony Blair, that we can live peacefully among ourselves as we did for thounsands of years. Anti-Meles doesn't translate to anti-Tigray: the birth place of our nationhood,culture, and religion. The people of Tigray who are proud Ethiopians have any problem with rest of Ethiopinas, Who could be more Ethiopian than Tigray? Of course, the answer is there is no first and second class or more or less Ethiopian. We are all United Ethiopians - first class citizens of this ancient homeland of ours. Let us don't fell into Meles' trap to hate eachother, instead let us show our affection to one another. Amara, Guragie, Oromo,Tegaru etc are all brothers and sisters. I support the EPRDF. There are things I don't support about the party but generally I am for EPRDF. ARE YOU ALL GOING TO SHOT ME! For me I don't accept a party that tries to make a country where 80 ethnic group live in to ONE. What is ONE? does it mean Amhara people administer the regions? will the regions be deprived of the right to have a say in their own localities? can someone please tell me what ONE is and how you can come up with one from 80? I applaud the essence of your timely message in this article.

I also want to note that your statement "Since the Oromos are the majority, they have the right...etc" is factually wrong, dangerous and misleading.(Please refer to the population censuses of 1984 and 1994 by the Ethiopian CSO).

Regardless of the error margins that all censuses anywhere may have, statements on demography can only be based on them. There simply is no other yardstick to measure population distribution other than a census. At the minimum, they are vastly better than arbitrary beliefs based on traditional discourse, geographic distribution...etc. The 1984 and 1994 censues have inarguably shown that there is NO ethnic majority in Ethiopia and that the country is a nation of ethnic minorities. The censuses clearly show that the largest ethnic groups by a wide margin are Oromo and Amhara each of which constitute 30 to 32% of the Ethiopian population. This of course means that there simply is no ethnic group that even comes close to being a majority even if you were to arbitrarily add 15% (millions) to their total number. Any statement to the effect that one group or the other is the "majority" is therefore completely baseless.

I personally don't see particular value in arguments over "who is the majority" in the context of the current political discourse in the country. In my view, regardless of the pervasiveness of the "ethnic climate" in the country, people should wake up to the fact that the core debates and the elections are essentially based on individual rights. However, I also believe that arbitrary and erroneous statements like the one included in your article dangerously skew peoples views on "proportionality" and resulting claims of "entitlements" in the political and economic spheres.

It is no secret that a significant portion of diaspora political discourse has long been based on the simplistic GUESS that "Oromos are a majority" in Ethiopia. This is primarily due to intellectual laziness to seek factual stats and the resulting tendency to simplisticly base the "guess" on relative geographic distribution. I think there is a clear need to once and for all close the book on this.

It is clear that the conduct and timing of the decision to transfer the capital of Oromia to AddisAbaba is dangerous and provocative. I also emphatically reject injecting demographic entitlements into the debate because AddisAbaba, Oromia, Tigray, Benishangul...etc equally belong to all ETHIOPIANS. I also strongly support the devolution of adminsitrative and economic power to local adminstrative structures, the use of local languages for administration and education where it makes true sense, the equality of all ethnic groups under the constitution and banning of all types ethnically prejudicial institutions and practices. However, whenever there is a practical and unabmibguous need for basing any level of public policy on the basis of the distribution of ethnic groups, facts must rule the day and there should be no room for guess work. The stakes are too high for those impacted by the short and long term consequences.

Hey my fellow Ethiopians, most of you know the word "interhamwee" during the per-election campaign. But you donot realize it with the aim and strategies of the CUD. What they were planning to do and what we see after the controversy of last week is the act of Interhamwee. They were agitating for public demonstrations and violence in the city ....but at last after the death of innocent people we see tham saying this is not our act. If things would have happened in the otherway round I am 100% sure that they would have said "we did it". The result would have been a masacre like the Rwandan "Interhamwee". But the wise leadership of 'I call EPRDF' ....or as in your own words Melles Zenawi, things come under controlled.
I am sure that the websites like Ethiopia Review have contributed a lot for violence ....like what we see in their page to demonstrate infront of the Ethiopian Embassy in Washiungton DC during the dinner party.... I am really ashmed of you. America already knows the political agendas of those contesting parties "your party...the CUD" and knows the reality at home...... and as we are observing the current issues, things are moving in the advantage of the EPRDF.
To conclude, it is not meles who was preparing for "interhamwee" but the CUD was preparing for ""interhamwee"" .......every one should accept the reality.

Asku what a lier and blind person are you? Is the Agazi militia belongs to CUD? Agazi militia is belong to Meles Zenawi.What is the d/ce b/n the Interhamwe militia and Agazi militia? Interhamwe means those who attack together. The Interhamwe were a Youth militia trained by the Rwandan goverment and the leader was Colonel Theoneste Bagosora. The Agazi is a militia trained by the TPLF/EPRDF goverment and the leader is PM Meles Zenawi. Look at this report written by a Rwandan citizen before the broke out of the crisis.

1. Force commander put in contact with informant by very very important government politician. Informant is a top level trainer in the cadre of interhamwe-armed militia of MRND.

2. He informed us he was in charge of last Saturdays demonstrations which aims were to target deputies of opposition parties coming to ceremonies and Belgian soldiers. They hoped to provoke the RPF BN to engage (being fired upon) the demonstrators and provoke a civil war. Deputies were to be assassinated upon entry or exit from Parliament. Belgian troops were to be provoked and if Belgians soldiers restored to force a number of them were to be killed and thus guarantee Belgian withdrawal from Rwanda.

3. Informant confirmed 48 RGF PARA CDO and a few members of the gendarmerie participated in demonstrations in plain clothes. Also at least one Minister of the MRND and the sous-prefect of Kigali were in the demonstration. RGF and Interhamwe provided radio communications.

4. Informant is a former security member of the president. He also stated he is paid RF150,000 per month by the MRND party to train Interhamwe. Direct link is to chief of staff RGF and president of the MRND for financial and material support.

5. Interhamwe has trained 1700 men in RGF military camps outside the capital. The 1700 are scattered in groups of 40 throughout Kigali. Since UNAMIR deployed he has trained 300 personnel in three week training sessions at RGF camps. Training focus was discipline, weapons, explosives, close combat and tactics.

6. Principal aim of Interhamwe in the past was to protect Kigali from RPF. Since UNAMIR mandate he has been ordered to register all Tutsi in Kigali. He suspects it is for their extermination. Example he gave was that in 20 minutes his personnel could kill up to 1000 Tutsis.

7. Informant states he disagrees with anti-Tutsi extermination. He supports opposition to RPF but cannot support killing of innocent persons. He also stated that he believes the president does not have full control over all elements of his old party/faction.

8. Informant is prepared to provide location of major weapons cache with at least 135 weapons. He already has distributed 110 weapons including 35 with ammunition and can give us details of their location. Type of weapons are G3 and AK47 provided by RGF. He was ready to go to the arms cache tonight-if we gave him the following guarantee. He requests that he and his family (his wife and four children) be placed under our protection.

9. It is our intention to take action within the next 36 hours with a possible H HR of Wednesday at dawn (local). Informant states that hostilities may commence again if political deadlock ends. Violence could take place day of the ceremonies or the day after. Therefore Wednesday will give greatest chance of success and also be most timely to provide significant input to on-going political negotiations.

10. It is recommended that informant be granted protection and evacuated out of Rwanda. This HQ does not have previous UN experience in such matters and urgently requests guidance. No contact has as yet been made to any embassy in order to inquire if they are prepared to protect him for a period of time by granting diplomatic immunity in their embassy in Kigali before moving him and his family out of the country.

11. Force commander will be meeting with the very very important political person tomorrow morning in order to ensure that this individual is conscious of all parameters of his involvement. Force commander does have certain reservations on the suddenness of the change of heart of the informant to come clean with this information. Recce of armed cache and detailed planning of raid to go on late tomorrow. Possibility of a trap not fully excluded, as this may be a set-up against this very very important political person. Force commander to inform SRSG first thing in morning to ensure his support.

Hey Meles .....you told them the truth ....Any one could not be above the law and democracy is protected by the rule of the law. What has been done by the government force are justifiable by all means and should continue to take preventive measures for the prevalence of the rule of law.
Demonstrations in the US and Europe and press release of Human Rights Watch which it gets from Ethiopian Human Rughts council (which is an affilate of CUD) may delay Aid but can't bring change in the reality at home. We have observed the leaders of CUD in one day violence.....Dr. Berhanu sent his family to the US, Lidetu wrote his Will (Nuzazie) and others they were totally dissolved. The leaders of CUD have tongues but no hearts to lead a country. They have money that they collect from the demonstrators in the diaspora but no thye capacity to excute a job. they have no grounds in the Ethiopian nationa and nationalities but they have strong supporters from journalists like Addisu Abebe in the VOA and Tekle Yehuala of DW... who doen't have the Ethical quality to be a journalist.
And the people of Addis Ababa have elected the CUD and the government will submit power to Administer the city to the CUD in the right time.

I read through your article. These days I dont really get annoyed by such "sticky" messages. I am an Oromoo and I share your concern over Junediin's despositions. However, you should at least ask yourself how the Oromos feel about Finfinnee. I get the impression that you have some mixed feelings. While admitting that the position of the oromos in Ethiopian politics, you seem to portray some fear over Finfinnee's becoming their capital.

Brother, why do we question a fact of nature. OPDO left Finfinnee and moved to Adaamaa. Again, they themselves moved back to Finfinnee. The fact is that Finfinnee never moved. So, why big deal??! It was all EPRDF's cheap game.

Secondly, many students and others have sacrificed their lives over this matter, and Oromos can no longer take these matters lightly. So unwittingly, EPRDF has started this thing called "the Great Awakening" in Ethiopia but only mishandled the nations and nationalities issue. Now it has reached a point of no return.

It is so amazing that many people resideing in Finfinnee, especially our Amhara brothers, are so annoyed by finfinnee's becoming Oromos' seat of government. That is really sad.

Ethiopians can worsen the situation or lesson the tense situaion now. It all depens upon their analysis of history and the current situation. However, Ethiopia shall never be the same again. It is so deplorable that CUD has failed to register a program on these matters. No political party can think of operating in the country unless nations and nationalities matter are addressed. Others are makign themselves busy for nothing.

Oromiyaa shall be free and Ethiopia will never be a prison for its own people. Let us build this nation with the fundamental tenets of unity and diversity. Otherwise Meles' premonition of that dreadful "interhamwe" will prevail.

I like your comment and idea in general, but I don't agree with your saying that the Amhara's are unhappy about Finfine being Oromia's capital. I live in Addis Ababa and I assure you that there is no such sentiment from Amhara side. Everybody here agrees that is not an issue at all. If you ask an Amhara or an Oromo here they just laugh saying that it's another EPRDF's trick and is accepted by the majority as "yetebela Equb". That means nobody creates a problem out of this anymore. Everybody here in Addis is happy to get the Oromo's back in Finfine.

I think the best solution to the current discord between races about Addis being the capital of Oromo is for other races to make Addis there captital city too. Addis Ababa is a land of all Ethiopians, not one particular race. It is a city built by the labour of all races and it belong to all races. No one race wins in a fight to owining the city solely to themselves as it doesn't belong to any single race. Any race that claims sole ownership of Addis will be met with a joint rejection of all other races. Let us live in peace by accepting that no single race dominates or owns Addis Ababa. Ertria is now an independent country recognized by the whole world. If we were strong like USA or Russia, it was possible for us to bring her back by all means necessary but we are not. Don't you think any attempt to bring her by force can produce Iraq-Kuwait result. It is not whether we are right or wrong. It is whether we are strong or weak and we have to admit that we are not strong enough to stand a joint outside force. China is a perfect example. Hong kong became part of China even though it was against the wish of the people of Hong kong. They are not stopping there. Tiwan will also become part of China. Who can stop them? It was a mistake to let Eritria go and it is a futile attempt to bring her back now. Thanks to Meles, we are a land locked country at the mercy of our neighbours. We have to beg countrys like Somalia and Sudan to use there port. We are making our neighbour richer and stronger while weakning ourselves. What will happen if all our neighbours refuse to let us use there port? They can strangle our economy. We always have to submit to there wish inorder to use there port. Meles made the choice for us even though all Ethiopians opposed to it. I wonder how he will be rememberd in history.
Now we should concentrate with the rest of Ethiopia. As you can see the seed of racism is planted in our country. We are getting more and more polarized. Heaven forbid the rest of Ethiopia can be fragmented. We have enemys all over. They are working for that to happen. Everyone that involves in our country affair is not well wisher even though they may appear. THE FUTURE OF ETHIOPIA IS NOT DETERMINED BY ETHIOPIANS IN ETHIOPIA. If we can see the outside plot against us, we can squash the inside turmoil.

Wake up, dear. Think deeper and beyond the obvious. You see only the surface. Dont' be too naive. Like it or not the issue of nations and nationlities remains the center of Ethiopian politics. Dont' live in the past. While you dream about the past, simultaneously things have slipped out of your hands. Eritrea is gone and if CUD tries more, Oromiyaa will be gone and so will Tigray, Ogadenia, Sidama and the rest. I am not a pro EPRDF, believe me. However, i see things wide and clear -- yesterday's Ethiopia that CUD is striving to resurrect will NEVER , EVER, come back. Othewise, as woyane stated, interhamwe era may step in. Some of us, out of our oppositoin to the EPRDF, thought CUD was the right party only to see OLD SHIMAGELES mainly from one tribal group trying to reverse the journey of freedom. The presence of confused other tribes other than in Amhara in the CUD proves nothing. All that counts is the DRAMA BEHIND THE SCENE. So, don't fool Ethiopians. An era is gone and never try to takes us back because it will never happen again
