Update from Ethiopia, June 9 - Part II

UPDATE FROM ETHIOPIA

June 09/2005

10:18 PM Ethiopian time

* Reliable sources in the EU have confirmed that the opposition, CUD & UEDF, have agreed with the ruling EPRDF to play by the rules and honor election results confirmed by the NBE ( or use and pass through the legal process of the land for any misgiving) , publicly call for non-violence and calm. It is reported that , just hours earlier, the opposition had rejected to sign the agreement, and went with its usual ambiguous stand.

* Heeding to a call passed through leaflets, and cell phone text messages, last night and today, some CUD organized residents of the Addis suburb went on uuta( crying aloud) from their homes earlier this evening. It is reported the police who found out that the cry stopped whenever they arrived to the scene, joined in the UUTTA later and arrested the participants as per the directive passed recently by the government.

* Ato Lidetu Ayalew, who has been separately held under house arrest for the last three days is released hours ago. Though the specific terms that led to the lifiting of his house arrest is not known, the sources stated there was some agreement entered by Ato Lidetu.

* Dr Berhanu Nega has been reported to have been seen meeting Ato Amare Aregawi of the Reporter news paper. The meeting took place at the MERIDIAN Hotel, here in Addis Ababa. The purpose of the meeting is not disclosed.
