Call a nationwide general strike

Call a nationwide general strike

June 7, 2005
ethiopianreview.com

Meles Zenawi's barbaric acts against peaceful protestors is sickening. It's a crime against humanity, and the perpetrators must face justice.

This is the time for opposition political parties must provide leadership. They need to come out and strongly condemn the atrocities committed against the students by the Meles regime. After all, the students are only demanding genuine democracy, which will enable the opposition parties to come to power.

The focus from now on needs to be, not reelection or vote recount, but the immediate resignation of Meles Zenawi's criminal regime. The opposition parties must lead the students, civic associations, religious groups, trade unions, and the society at large, including Ethiopians abroad, to demand the resignation of Meles Zenawi and all high level officials who are ordering the savage attacks on peaceful students. Until the Meles regime resigns, a nationwide general strike needs to be called.

If this doesn't happen, the sacrifices the students and others are paying with their lives will be in vain. This will also embolden Meles and gang to continue brutalizing the people.

Sooner or later, Meles will go after the opposition parties. There is doubt about that. So there is no point to wait until he finishes off the students before turning his barrel and sticks on them. Join the students and the workers now and provide the necessary political leadership to the struggle.

Let's not expect help from the international community. This is about time Ethiopians inside the country and abroad must take matters into their own hands and liberate Ethiopia from the murderous thugs.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

it is irresponsible to call for a national strike at this moment- particularly from people far away to feel the consequences of the action. Leadershib does not mean following the spontanous act of students. The opposition parties must work through legal and diplomatic means for the release of the students and must keep up the pressure on the government through other means.Must aviod a show down at this stage. Other wise they are going to loose every thing they have gained recently and with them the Ethiopian people. As they have started they schould fully bring the legal battle to the end. They schould seek the support of the international community as they are diong. To say let's not wait for the support of the international comunity is dangerous. The opposition needs it to succed. In Georgia and Ukrain and Yugoslavia their support was very critical. And lets not forget Meles is very vurnerable to international pressure. He is very much dependent on them to rule. He is waiting for their legitimacy. So keep up the internatinal pressure.
For the sake of Ethiopia I hope the leaders of the opposition will not be carried away by their recent election success and will use thier power and influence wisely. They schould not bring the people to total confrontation with the regime when the chances of success are not high. Otherwise I am afraid it could be like the 66 Revolution when all our hope was changed into nightmare. The then opposition has contributed greatlly to the coming of that dark period through its bravado and adventurism. Those in the diaspora schould stop encouraging spontanity and adveturism and rather preache caution.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

What do you gain by inciting violence? I have been reading your news and comments since the election. You have been reporting not only a biased opinion but also preaching violence. It is easy for you (who ever you are) living in your comfortable house in USA and telling people what they should do? If you feel that strongly, why don't you go in the country and fight yourself. It is amazing how quickly we forget what we went through in the 70s. It feels like the EPRP and the MESON are coming back. The opposition are sitting in their butt inciting violence while the students are fighting their battle. Is it not what EPRP did in the 70s arming children and getting them massacared? How could anybody would revert to such situation after the experience we had in "Red Terror". GOD HELP US??

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

now is the time that the ethiopian people have to take the country's matter in hand. Don't talk anymore that you are a politician or you love your country but act against those gorrela orginated half human woyanes. if you are count them they are not more than the numbers of a human fingers. But look how they are playing games against the ethiopian people for their interest. attack them with anything that force them to quite from their atrocity. melese, bereket and few cadres have no a single right to destroy ethiopia. we all have to follow the brave addis ababa students. They are the starters to the fire that brings dramatic change in the country. all students in the country especially from tigry province have to follow their young brothers and sisters in addis who are under the woyane gun point. the tigrians people have to show their belongness to the ethiopian people by being against the woyane which is saying representing them. if today tigrians stand against woyane, with in a few hour it could be the end of the woyane era. so, tigrians brothers and sisters must act now to save the ethiopian people. Yhose who are working for woyane must stand for the ethiopian people. the woyane time is over. you have to be with the ethiopian people who is suffering under few criminals who are saying representing the tigrians but ruling the whole country for their interest. look the high positions in the country are on their hand.. almost all deplomats in the high positiuons are woyanes. Those people like genet zewdie, dawit yohannes, and others the so called the amhara, oromo, and south states representatives who are getting the leftover positions have to denounce their involvment with the woyane. woyane have enough money, and after destroying ethiopia they will run first to tigry then to foreiegn country. but you the leftover eaters, think. take the ethiopian side. withdraw from the woyane qualition.
the brave ethiopian people everywhere. continue with your fight against woyane. don't stop. if you afraid and give them time, they will destroy all of us. so, don't give them time. those who die in the name ethiopia against the woyane, will be the forever children of ethiopia. look the people of iraq. you have to destroy dogs( woyanes) who are eating you.
they are very few. the tigrian people must not leason those woyane dogs who are lecturing hate. ethiopia without tigry province and ethiopians wthout tigrians are not existed, it is not now and it will not in the future. we all are the good time and bad time one people. woyane must leave now. the election outcome is to the people. The people are for the oppositions. the oppositions must lead the people in this critical time. those especially in america must work day and night to persuade the american people and govt to stop suporting the woyane govt.
ethiopia will be for ethiopians. all must stand together. contimue with strike, demonstration ---until the dogs leave the area.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

This is sticky for sure but we have come to this. Those of us in the diasporas
· Let us make a phone call to our congressman, call everyone we know in the international community to let them know the situation,
· Tony Blair is in USA to convince Pres. Bush that Africa needs help. We need to inform them that such type of abuse and destruction of a nation by people like Meles should be forced to be accountable.
· Of course, we must help them through finance but let us use all the means to get up-to-date information via any means of technology.
We need to outsmart the TPLF tugs. We need to be careful the propaganda that Woyane is hated does not mean that Tigreans are heated as Meles’s propaganda tells us.

They start again their barbaric act. In this century, at the information age people like these murderes, tried to rule by force. How ignorant they are. They have to update themselves. How these savages rule Ethiopia. They must be kicked out.
They beat, kill young students going to their campus, because they exercise their right in their own country.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

I have two Qs for the person who suggested the general strike....ahve you realised what the consequences of the strike..meaning the strife, disturbance will be? Are you inside Ethiopia or outside? those who are outside can afford to wish for blood shade and killings. Afterall they are far from the heat and the fire. any disturbance.....strife and chaos will not bring CUD and EUDf to power. Because there will not be any more Ethiopia to rule. Addis Abeba is not Ethiopia...neither the so called very "big" cities. right now many people have started thinking as stupidly as EPRDF....may God protect us!!!!!

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

Blood has been spilt and lives have been lost. Now it is no time to contemplate dilly-dally or procrastinate. In politics time is every thing. If we do not rise to the challenges and call EPRDF's bluff, then the blood thirsty regime will be emboldened. EPRDF knows full well that it cannot take innocent life with impunity. Like the murderers in Rwanda, former Yugoslavia, Iraq, and many other places, it will be made to be accountable for its masacre if it dares to perpetrate against the Ethiopian people. Hereafter, the counting of the ballot is only academic. It has been over traken by the incidents of the last two to three days. EPRDF has shown its true rapacious nature. It will not relenquish power unless it is challenged by the peace loving Ethiopian people a la Ukraine. The people have shown their ever-readiness. All they are waiting is for a seasoned but daring leadership. Hence, I support the call for the general strke strongly. Machiavelli had once said, if you shoot at the prince/king you had better kill him. Now that the regime has been challenged and has been exposed for what it is, there should not be shirking.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

Good call Ethiopian Review!

The May election in Ethiopia has removed the mask of democracy from EPRD regime and exposed its brutal nature. We have seen the regime’s willingness to unleash terror upon innocent students. The time has come for the opposition to abandon the futile political negotiation with this brutal dictatorship. Instead, they must give leadership to the mass to liberate the country from this despotic regime.

The opposition groups must not repeat the mistake of 2001. The people are rising. They want freedom and democracy. Give leadership and ask for the immediate removal of the EPRDF regime from power. The people of Ethiopia are awaiting for your leadership.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

I think it is a good idea to call nation wide strike, but we Ethiopians in diaspora support them for what ever needs the opposition leaders have and nessesary and we have to assure them our support is a continuous one.
1 - For one thing we have to help the oppositions by sending money.
2 - we have to help the people in the stike again by sending money or by any means they can get food and drinks while they are on strike
3 - I thik from now on we don't have to wait for any international organization to solve our problems. We Ethiopians have to try to solve our problems by our solves. I think the struggle has started, and lets join the students in Ethiopia from all over the world . I don't think there is a way to stop the struggle and all Ethiopians togther for one goal let the people have a chance to take and give the fresh air of Ethiopia to Ethiopians
LETS DO IT NOW AND TODAY.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

I agree with you 100%
Let me tell you all if you all have little time. I was having a conversation about the election issue with an eldery man who is 77 years old. I asked him about the democratic election in Ethiopia, prior to the election. This elderly man said "Ethiopians are very nice people" But at this time, Meles's regim, who landlocked the country, creates ethnicity trouble, who is responsible for for over 80,000 lives on the Badme war and who is responsible for ethiopian young people to be on the street due to his new educational police, should have been thrown by force. No such Democratic process for Meles's regime. I love the people of Ethiopia! But, Meles? O, Man he is a trouble maker. Let us be with our innecnt people who are stragling for pace and fair election. God bless Ethiopia...

Re: Call a nationwide general strike I think NOT

The question will be if the Prime Minister of a Country issues a law and some citizens break the law and get jailed, is the action of the PM illegal?

I think not. Under the law the demonstration was illegal, one because the opposition party had already filed a legal challenge against Melese and that hasn't been exausted; two because the contested ridings and the votes are being investigated and due process must prevail before taking action.

Our CUD leaders are able to lead not only our country but also the whole of Africa!!new change:
1.What is required for effective change is continuity of sincere effort to release and let go of inefficient thought patterns from the past.
2.The greatest revolution in our generation is that of human beings, who by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.
3.Men do change, and change comes like a little wind that ruffles the curtains at dawn, and it comes like the stealthy perfume of wildflowers hidden in the grass.
4.The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created--created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination.
5.Most of the change we think we see in life is due to truths being in and out of favour.

Don't fear change, embrace it.GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA.AMEN.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

Oh, people please!

Do you think Meles gives a dam about a nation wide strike?! Do you people think life is as precious to Meles and CO. as it is in the west?! You people must have lived in the 'la la' land for long! Last time there was a riot in the country, 2001, what Meles said about protests around the world by the diaspora was "Egna hizb binchacha min chegeren"! The guy doesn't give a dam! If teachers and civil servants leave their jobs for a strike, there are millions others that are unemployed would definately kill to get that job! Why do u think all these protests are happening in the first place? Its because the young don't have hope for their future and they don't give a **** about their lives! There are millions of young people with the same problem around the nation. And how the heck are you gonna rise against guns and rocket propelled grinades, and troops that live like a robot doing what one man tells them to do?!

I say, let's condemn what is happening to the students! Let's urge our government for the ban on demonstrations to be lifted and wait for the outcome of the pending investigations for the election results! After that, if the votes come out in favor of the opposition and the government refuses to give up power, or the NEB fails to investigate in a fair manner, then we can justify anything done against the government! But plz, under no circumstances shall we call our people to do what we don't do! It seems extremely selfish for us to sit on our azzez in a comfortable first world apartment and call on our people to risk their lives! Plz, leave the people alone!

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

The idea to call a nationwide general strike is good but i hope you all know that any demonstration is banned in Addis. What are you telling the people? to act against the ban? What if the people start the strike and the woyanes continue killing thousends of people? I belive that you also know woyanes will do anything to stay longer.

You are telling the people that you will support the opposition parties in finance, you will try inform the international socity about the crime EPRDF has been commiting. This can be a good solution and it doesn't invole any harm to you. But u provide a strike as a solution that may result in death of many people. Don't you think this is inhumane? how can someone advice somebody to die for him/her while he/she is chilling in US or somewhere far.I,personnaly, don't ask someone to die for me. If there is no other solution and death is a must then i should be the one to be first so that i can have the gut to tell my people to follow me.

In addition, even the opposition parties doen't recommend this as a solution. They have been telling the people not to do anything illegal. But u...

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

I'm a somali from jigijga. what is EPRDF for me nothing? another representative of the Empire. what will CUD/UEDF be for me ? nothing just another representative of the empire. Meles is a Tigrean working for Tigreans. CUD/UEDF will be vhauvinist Amharas, Oromos, Gurages..standing for their own. We are different. what is the general strike for me? It is a high time and opportunate moment for us to determine our own fate..our liberty!!!!!!

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

I am not pro/con CUD or UDEF, but I know that EPRDF should be gone. And the opposition parties are better for us at this stage. Later, there will be time to evaluate the oppositions and decide on their future to lead us.

Therefore, I agree with the nation wide strike.

Whether we like it or not Meles & Co. with their federal robocops, won't leave us alone. Sooner or later the government will bring some sort of damage to the people, because it's about their survival. It's obvious that they won't win with honest count, so they will find someway to fraud the re-voting or recounting again. The question is this way or the other "how much" damage will they bring to us? Because anyway there will be a damage. So the more we wait the more will be the damage. If we give them time, they can even create distrust among true Ethiopians and divide us as they used to when took over 14 years ago. So this is the right time to stop them; when everyone wants to contribute and the trust among us is still there.

Please let's unite and standup the dictators. If we slip our chance this time, we will remain slaves for generations.(If not for EPRDF, for other related types).

For those of you who think that this kind of opinion is of those from diaspora, you are wrong. We Ethiopians living in Ethiopia also think the same way.

Peace to Ethiopia and may God help us in our true purpose.

IF THINGS TURNED IN TO NIGHTMARE AND THOUSANDS MASSACRED WITHOUT HAVING EFFECT TO TOPPLE WOYANE WE TURN ARROUND AND CONDEMN THE OPPOSITION FOR LEADING INNOCENT CHILDREN IN TO THEIR DEATH CHAMBER.

I as an Ethiopian believe that this crisis is the logical outcome of the flawed electoral process, which was intended to snatch the expressed will of the Ethiopian people through deceit, intimidation and persecution. Stunned by the determination of the voters and the outcome that would have ended his ethno-apartheid regime, Prime Minster Meles Zenawi had declared what amounts to a state of emergency prohibiting all forms of public gathering and imposed media blockade against the opposition and civic groups.

Humiliated by the outcome of the election, the regime has intensified its reign of terror and vengeful acts against civilians. Thousands, including election observers and supporters of the opposition groups have been imprisoned, killed and disappeared.

It is clear that these barbaric acts have generated huge resentments and defiance by ordinary people. Hence, no wonder that there is a nationwide upsurge of anger and a mood of defiance by students of higher learning institutions. I fear that the escalation of the tension and state violence against unarmed citizens will pave the way for a nationwide civil disobedience. Should the regime continue with its repressive acts, the situation may lead to further bloodshed and chaos.

While I applaud the courageous act of young people and ordinary Ethiopians in the face of state assault, we urge the international community to support the expressed will of Ethiopians and to stand by the nation and the people who are determined to secure the well being of their children.

I firmly believe that it would be an act of irony if the international community were to take a different stance in Ethiopia’s predicament when similar democratic upsurges were supported elsewhere.

Particularly, I believe that as one of the major donor nations, the British Government has a moral responsibility to pressure Mr Melese Zenawi’s regime to desist from its acts of terror and to respect the expressed will the Ethiopian people.

Sternly concerned by the situation, I call upon:

1. All Ethiopians

1.1. To stand together, regardless of differences, in order to defend our legitimate rights and dignity

1.2. As often stated, a ‘nation that fails to defend its youth fails to secure its future’. Our recent past is a testimony of what could happen if we are complacent about the values we cherish – our fundamental rights and the well being of our children

2. The International Community

2.1. To condemn the repressive and barbaric act of the EPRDF regime and to put pressure on Mr Zenawi to desist from the act of terror against students, civilians and opposition leaders

2.2. To pressure the regime to remove its security forces from the campuses of the institutions of higher learning and to allow the resumption of normal classes

2.3. To pressure the regime to immediately release all political prisoners with no pre-conditions and to bring to justice those who had committed criminal acts and violence against students and civilians

2.4. To pressure the regime to immediately lift the state of emergency and media blockade against the opposition

2.5. To pressure the ruling regime to allow an independent investigation into the alleged election irregularities and to respect its outcome

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

This is what is going to happen…..Meles will say wait until the investigation of the election irregularity is complete and the final election result is addressed. And then he will pay or infiltrate the opposition and get some kind of concession from some either to dismantle it from within or get them to accept the result which will show that he had won the rural area while the opposition won some of the urban area which will give him another 5 years. And the opposition will be well just like the rest opposition of this god forsaken country called Ethiopia…..I feel sorry for those who had just died fighting for something they thought that the rest of Ethiopia was behind them when in fact when the taugh gets going most Ethiopians retreat and crumble under pressure. Few months from now it will be as if nothing had happened.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

First of all we should all pray to god that the whole problem resolves peaceful without further death of innocent people. And the second most important thing is not to fall in for melese's idology(dividing ethiopians through ethencity). Our enemy is the one and only "MELES".

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

I am of the opinion that we should never be arguing about who is against Tgres or otherwise. This is not a time to discuss about how, who, what, which, when, regarding these people. You have seen enough and please don’t pacify those true Ethiopians who are trying to make a difference in this crucial time in the history of our country. Those of you who keep thinking everything are hanky dory; please, the least you can do is to refrain from commenting and leave the struggle for others. Just read the following and make your own decision about the people whom you are trying to defend. Please, leave the issue of Tgres for the history to judge! For God’s sake while you are defending the un-defendable, our brothers and sisters are being murdered by same Tgres who don’t even speak the local language that is the reality no one can deny it anymore. I am in no way against the people of Tgre but the time has come for those who consider themselves Ethiopians to stand together. Please, read the following:

Eyewitness: Ethiopian protests
Yeneayhu, 29, an Ethiopian lecturer at Addis Ababa University, tells the BBC News website what he saw in the capital on Wednesday when police clashed with protesters accusing the ruling party of fraud in last month's elections.

Yeneayhu saw some of his students attacked with gun butts
I am running here and there to see what has been going on.

I can see people running away from very well armed police in the distance.

You just have to run, just run.

You have to be really alert as you don't know what will happen.

Simple ordinary victims

It is the most terrible thing because the military forces do not speak the same language as us.

They speak the Tigrigna language as they are from Mekle - the ruling party's area in the north.

As you can't communicate with them, simply ordinary people like me are also victims.

If I tried to explain that I had nothing to do with all of this they wouldn't be able to understand.

No-one around here can tell them anything.

And so that is why all the people run away as soon as they see them coming.

Big clash

This morning I saw three people that had been shot dead.

They were picked up by a Red Cross car.

Yeneayhu said people were really fighting the police

I had been going to the Commercial College, which is near the Mercato market in the city.

A lot of people were at the market.

There are no taxis today because of the strike and so no-one was at work.

People had thought that the government would make an announcement in response to the disputed election results, following the past two days of protests.

But instead the Mekle had a big clash with the people.

There were no cars as all the ways had been closed with rocks.

People were throwing stones and then the police started really shooting.

Gun shots

People were really fighting them.

Anyone who had been on the street was involved.

HAVE YOUR SAY
When the crowd dispersed in fear, they started shooting at them. There was blood everywhere

Yosef, Addis Ababa

Send us your comments

I was running, just like the others.

But I saw the military people.

They were directly shooting at everyone.

They were aiming right at the people.

It was the worst thing about today's experience in the city.

This is really the most disastrous thing in my whole life.

Uncertainty

And tomorrow, from what I have heard, the same thing will happen again.

It will keep happening until the government takes action over the election results.

People want some kind of immediate action.

As of yet though, I have not heard any government body reporting about the situation.

Nothing.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

Hello Everybody
I want to give my reply for those people who thinks and said this is not a right time for a nation wide strike .
I know we Ethiopians are "GERAGER" OR in the other hand peacefull people, but there is no time for "GERAGRENET " OR "DEGENET " at this time. Meles already declare that he and his party won the election, so what are we waiting for? IS the dictator waiting for us when he deciared that he is the winner? I Think there is no time to waste . We Ethiopians have to hold hand in hand and stand together for the sake of those who gave their lives to Ethiopia and Ethiopians, especially those young students. Please don't cover your ears their blood is calling us .Please don't close you'r eyes they are at this moment beating by Meles cruel police officers Even while we are talking at this moment they are fighting and dying in the street of Ethiopia. This is the time to act , this is the time to cry to the world, this is the time to show our solidarity to our people , and most of all this is the time to show our strength to Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair. that we can do it by our selves. There is no way to go back now .
Please help and support the struggle FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR FAMILY WHO LEAVES IN FEAR AND THE SAKE OF ETHIOPIA.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

A nationwide general strike is appropriate at this time. This should be addressed on the vigil that is going to held on Tuesday 06/14/05 in many cities of America. Opposition parties/leaders must not shy away from taking this measures. The innocent, young and old of Ethiopians are paying with their lives. We have to do everything necessary every hour of the day till these tugs leave our country.

Re: Call a nationwide general strike

PLEASE EVERYONE RE-Read this statment again and stop for a few sconds and think where we learn from. "Meles Zenawi's barbaric acts against peaceful protestors is sickening. It's a crime against humanity, and the perpetrators must face justice". Do you think this applies to Ethiopia? I do not think so. We learn it from these outsiders. Is it bad? no it is not. Do you think it will work? Do you think the outsiders Like it that been done practically? The answer is no to both questions. They see it as a game when poor country like ethiopia, people kill each other. They never help on time before it happen. They of course will when it is too late. You know what term they are going to use? "Humanterian Aid". That is yet. Therefore, I do not expect any thing from outsiders. Be yourself.
