LEAD PHARMACY TECHNICIAN, PROCUREMENT AND
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT

1. DESCRIPTION
The Lead Pharmacy Technician, Procurement and Inventory Management, manages
the inventory of drugs and medical/surgical supplies for the Hospital pharmacy areas.
This position is accountable for managing the day to day activities of the pharmacy
technician staff that is involved with ordering drugs and medical/surgical supplies.
This position, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, will participate in all
activities of the pharmacy department that involve the inventory management of
drugs and medical/surgical supplies. The position functions in accordance with stand
written procedures, guidelines, and state and federal regulations.

2. QUALIFICATONS
The Lead Pharmacy Technician, Procurement and Inventory Management, must have
good computer application skills, possess the ability to work well with others, make
decisions, problem solve, communicate, and delegate responsibility.
2.1. Possess an Associate Degree in Business or Computer Science
2.2. General chemistry knowledge
2.3. Basic algebra knowledge
2.4. Proficient reading/writing skills
2.5. Current National Pharmacy Certification
2.6. Demonstrates supervisory and coaching skills
2.7. Three years of pharmacy experience
2.8. Two years of pharmacy purchasing experience

3. RESPONSIBILITIES
The major job responsibilities (MJR’s) of this position are leadership, technical
support, quality improvement, orientation/training, and project development.
The following activities are components of the position to assist in meeting the major
job responsibilities:
3.1. Exercise operational management of the pharmacy inventory systems.
3.1.1. Support of inventory changes based on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics
Committee decisions.
3.1.2. Support of WORx formulary changes.
3.1.3. Support of Pyxis formulary changes.
3.2. Manage pharmacy procurement for non-drug purchases using the University
Procard system.
3.3. Process wholesaler invoices for payment by accounts payable.
3.4. Provide training and inservice education to pharmacy staff regarding pharmacy
inventory management products.
3.4.1. Contract compliance
3.4.2. Use of Cardinal Health ordering system
3.5. Evaluate contract compliance and implement change to correct in all pharmacy
purchasing areas of the hospital.
3.5.1. Use reports from Marketplace@Novation to evaluate the contract
compliance of the pharmacy purchasing areas.
3.5.2. Maintain inventory to reflect changes in contracts.
3.6. Manage the transfer of drugs between areas of the pharmacy, the hospital and
non-hospital accounts.
3.6.1. Support the processing requisitions by the purchasing technicians.
3.6.2. Complete monthly transfer of drug costs to appropriate cost centers.
3.7. Communication to pharmacy staff regarding drug shortages and drug recalls.
3.7.1. Maintain drug shortage information on the pharmacy website.
3.7.2. Notify the pharmacy formulary think tank of impending problems in drug
supply.
3.7.3. Notify pharmacy staff of drug recalls and follow up to assure compliance
with the drug recall policy.
3.8. Coordinate annual equipment inventory (E-Bars) for Pharmacy.
3.9. Provide technical support for purchasing and inventory management systems
(Pyxis Consultant, CII Safe NarcVault, Cardinal.com).

4. PATIENT POPULATION SERVED
Pharmacy Services provides pharmaceutical care to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent,
adult and geriatric populations.

5. RELATIONSHIPS
5.1. Works in collaboration with the Associate Director of Pharmacy Services –
Finance to meet departmental goals and objectives.
5.2. Works in collaboration with the other pharmacy management staff and pharmacy
employees.
