We've recently come across a new medication dispensing device called InstyMeds(TM). It's been out since 2001, and two of our subscribers have it in their facility: one at the Community Heath Network in Indianapolis, and one at the St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis.
Is there anyone else who has this system? We'd like to learn more about it from any facility who uses that system and how it affect your day-to-day routine. (We also plan to ask the 2 subscribers at those above facility's about it directly, so we can see if they might not be able to write about it for us to include in a future PPO edition.)
We have had an InstyMed dispenser in our Emergency Dept. for about 2 years. We in the inpatient pharmacy absolutely love it! It has reduced the number of outpatient prescriptions presented to us by 90%. The company tracks usage and sends replenishments regularly. Our techs receive a report on demand, (usually once a day) and refill as needed. On occasion, just like with any other mechanical device, there will be a problem with a bottle failing to fall into the proper area. When that happens, we get a phone call from InstyMed with a request to open the cabinet to retrieve the product. The cash handling is taken care of by our fiscal department.
