Baciim, Polymyxin, etc.

Do your facilities still use a lot of these drugs? If so, what are you using them for? OR irrigations?

Thanks!

We still use Baciim. I couldn't tell you the last time we ordered the other. The Baciim goes to the OR Floor stock.

We use a lot of Kanamycin, as well as a fair amount of Baciim. Both are loaded in OR Pyxis machines.

Our hospital uses this product like water in our OR for irrigations. We order at least 150 vials per week

We do also Ruth...

We are actually looking for an in with the orthopods (they're the primary ones ordering) to show them that evidence-based practice shows that it doesn't do any good.

We're spending $75k per year just on the meds, that doesn't include the irrigation soln, bottle, tech time, etc.

There was an article published in the mid-80s I'm hunting down now about it....

Ruth, Would you please share with me the info you find. Our surgeons are using a soln that is 50,000units of bacitracin and 10,000,000 polymixin then the other soln also adds 1gm of neomycin, both solns are in 1000ml sterile water.
Thanks,
Lisa
