Proair Alternative

This week we had our 1st complaint from surgery regarding the Ventolin inhalers we have been purchasing since last September. The anesthesiologist group were complaining that the inhalers with the counters didn't work with the breathing circuits and they didn't want to use a respiratory spacer. I recall meeting with the Respiratory Manager last summer and a new improved part was available that made the inhalers with counters work with patients on ventilators. Here is the information. It s called Aerovent CHC (collapsible holding chamber) by monaghan. PN85950 cs/50. It maintains closed circuit integrity and collapses when not in use. There are two products. The 2nd one has a piece that extends the MDI receptacle port to work with the dose counter inhalers. PN85950A cs/50
I don't know the exact savings because I don't know what our cost would be, this item would be purchased through our Materials department, but based on the average internet cost, we would still save $10.00 each by purchasing the Ventolin inhalers and this part instead of the more expensive Proair. Check it out with the respiratory experts at your hospital if this might work for you.

Re: Proair Alternative

Thanks for the information. We recently changed to these new Ventolin inhalers w/ counters. We didn't get much push back from RT, but I haven't heard anything from the surgery department. From what I understood RT already had this "adapter" that would eliminate the problem with the counter device. The savings were just too substantial not to move forward with this brand. We were previously using ProAir, as well. Thanks for the information! Take care!

Re: Proair Alternative

We switched from Proventil HFA to Ventolin HFA about 6 weeks ago. I contacted the respiratory director first and she was pleased with the savings! I've not heard any neagtive feedback from respiriatory or anesthesia, but I know I would have if there is a problem.
But based your posts, I'll email respiratory to see if they have the adapter--thanks!
