Petersen's Cay
Hi to all !! Love this message board and as first time travelers to Bahamas, my wife and I have found the info incredibly useful. My question is about Petersen's Cay. My wife and I would love to do the Kayak trip out to Petesen's Cay but is it possible to just rent a kayak and paddle out or do you have to take a guided trip? Any info about Petersen's Cay would be great. Also we are staying at the Island Palms and we have a rental car all week so we would like to explore the more secluded naturally beautiful areas. Any tips for this would be appreciated. -Andre

Andre, I'm not into kayaking but I do have a flier here I picked up while down there last month. Although the main thrust of the flier is kayaking, nowhere does it mention renting them out without a guide accompanying you. That doesn't mean the answer to your question is no, but it leans in that direction. Hopefully one of the regular visitors who help folks here will stop by and bail me out with a more concrete answer. Regards, Danny Site Administrator |

Most of the Kayaking is by tours. There is kayak rental at Port Lucaya, but I do not know if they will let you take them by car to another location. Check with Reef Tours at Port Lucaya. They do not rent Kayaks, but they will know who does. |

Thanks for the info...sounds like I'll have to book a tour which is ok with us. I've also read that there are ferrys over to Petersen's Cay. Is that true and where would we catch that ferry? |

Hi there, Sorry, there are no kayaks for rent that you can take out to Petersen's Cay. I wouldn't recommend that anyway cause it's about a 30 minute kayak ride in the ocean and it's better to be safe and stick with a group. The only way to get to Petersen's Cay is to either take the kayaking tour which is awesome or you can rent a boat from Reef Tours Ltd..they have reasonable prices and if you're really looking to be on your own this would be the way to go..you could also then take in some snorkeling on the reefs. Have a great time! Janice |

We just returned from our first trip to BGI and loved it. We too looked at the kayak trip to Petersens Cay but through a series of circumstances ended up going out by boat with Captain Peter of Lucayan Watersports (he leaves from the little dock behind the Flamingo). We were actually really pleased we did it this way as he anchored the boat in a spectacular snorkeling are a ways off the Cay. The snorkeling here was far superior to what we saw closer in to the Cay (where we went later in the tour). The kayakers were just arriving as we were there and unless they were prepared to swim quite a ways out, they would not have seen what we saw from the boat site. We chose to do the other kayak tour which went through the mangroves and was combined with a visit to Gold Rock Beach and hike into Lucayan National Park. This was an excellent tour with a very knowledgable guide (Mike). We felt we got the best of both worlds by this combination. Just thought our experience might be worth sharing. |
