Festival in July
There is a festival on GBI sometime in July and the name is something like "Junkanoo" or close. I was there two yrs ago and it had just ended that Thursday. Can someone please tell me when it is planned for this yr. I am going again in July and need to know when this festival will be held. Any info is appreciated. |

Here is the entire schedule of events on GBI for the month of July, courtesy of BahamasVacationGuide.com Junkanoo is most likely to be included in the Bahamas Independence Day Celebrations on the 9th and 10th (or both). I'm not certain. Hopefully Janice will stop by here and can give you more exact info. Regards, Danny July: July: CRICKET SEASON (MARCH - NOV.) (NASSAU/PARADISE ISLAND) Cricket matches are played every Saturday and Sunday during Cricket Season at Haynes Oval, West Bay Street, Nassau. Games begin at 11am. (242) 326-4720. For cricket matches on Grand Bahama Island, call the Lucayan Cricket Club at (242) 373-1460. July: PARROT JUNGLE'S GARDEN OF THE GROVES 4TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS: A cultural extravaganza complete with fireworks, dance performances, food and music in celebration of the Bahamian and American independence. 12noon - 8pm at Parrot Jungle's Garden of the Groves. (242) 373-5668. July: BLACKJACK TOURNAMENT: One of the several high rolling black jack tournaments taking place at the Royal Oasis Casino. For reservations call (800) 432-2294 or (242) 350-7068. July 4: US INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS: Enjoy and evening of dancing and celebrations at Count Basie Square in the Port Lucaya Marketplace. Featuring the band, Modern Vintage and a spectacular fireworks display! July 9: BAHAMIAN INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS: Count Basie Square in the Port Lucaya Marketplace comes alive with pre-Independence celebrations. Featuring Gino D along with Port Lucaya's house band Ultra Vibe. Beginning at 9pm. Dance, party, celebrate! Fireworks display at midnight. July 9-13: BAHAMAS SUMMER BOATING FLING/FLOTILLA: Port Lucaya Marina. July 10: Independence Day, Public Holiday. The Bahamas commemorates it's 30th year of Independence from Great Britain, with church services and festivities throughout the islands. Highlights of this year's Independence Anniversary's celebrations include (July  "T-shirt" Day". T-shirts to be worn by individuals and participating businesses.

Hi Danny and Jessica, I think what Jessica is talking about is the street festival that is done on the Royal Oasis property every Thursday evening during the summer months. This is free, a lot of fun and they do have a Junkanoo parade. There are lots of native foods and drinks to purchase and they usually have entertainment and dancing. Janice |
