Last Light

I have just read "Last Light" by Alex Scarrow. Its set in the present with a series of events leading to the closedown of the worlds oil supply. I won't put any potential readers off by giving away the reason.

Its quite a fast paced portrayal of social collapse, and rings quite true for anyone who considers that people nowadays are too hedonist and selfish.

Its quite fast paced with a good climax, and has some references to our potential for dealing with a post apocalyptic future.

Re: Last Light

Bit of a coincidence ....... I'm about a third of the way through it at the moment. So far it seems to portray
a very plausable and prophetic scenario based on the current state of the world and this country given our now total lack of self sufficiency as a nation.

So far a good exciting read with very believable characters.

Re: Last Light

Best book I've read in quite a while. Highly recommended both as an intelligently crafted pacey thriller and as a very believable way in which things may pan out at some point in the not too distant future.

Saw a few episodes in the 1970s. Got the dvds as fast as they came out.

Re: Last Light

I've just read it too. Ordered it from Amazon after Kevin's first message.

Excellent account of the disaster, though essentially no rebuilding. I didn't quite buy the conspiracy theory, but it doesn't really matter, as there's lots of other ways it could happen.

Makes me feel that the traditional World war III scenario got it all wrong. Don't waste time nuking cities, just target your missiles on the oil refineries. With those gone, the cities (and their inhabitants), are nothing but a burden to the enemy.

Re: Last Light

I think the book shows how fragile our society really is. Over reliant on oil from overseas, not much built locally and not enough food grown.

It is quite scary how our society is knitted together. Andrew Marr has a new series "Britain from Above". The first programme was very good but reinforced how fragile things are. One of the scary bits invovled a guy working for the national grid who has to get additional electricity up and distributed at the end of every episode of Eastenders, when all the kettles go on. If things go wrong, the lights go out!!!!

If you didn't catch it the first time look out for it.

Re: Last Light

Hi Kevin
As an electrician, I am very well aware of just how fragile the electrical system is - putting it in private hands, was an act of lunacy of the government!
Maintainance is not being done properly to sub-stations...that is why many are catching fire or exploding.

Trouble is, if NEW Survivors proves more popular than Eastenders.....the fans putting their kettles on at the end could break the National grid!!

Seriously, more power stations are needing to be built, be they coal, nuclear or wind.....the rising population + a cold winter, could prove very dangerous.
