Message:   Rec cheer coach,

I was glad to see your post, because we don't believe in tryouts either. Our philosophy is that rec squads are INSTRUCTIONAL. How do girls learn the basics of cheerleading if we don't have rec squads that they can join? They don't have tryouts for the football players. Not everyone can afford for their girl to join a cheer gym, which in our area can cost up to $4,000 a year. We actually have rec squads in our area that have tryouts for the first and second grade squads! One team has tryouts, and if you don't make the squad, you can cheer, but only for the smurfs (kindergarten and first grade football teams). I think that it is horrible.

One of my biggest testimonials is regarding a girl that was on our competition squad a few years ago. She was a VERY big girl when she started, but had more heart than anyone else on the squad. She was too big to join any other sports teams; they would take one look at her and say no. She cheered for us on our competition squad, was great base, and lost 5 skirt sizes that season! She is now a very confident high-schooler who has come back and now helps coach the 2nd and 3rd graders. Who knows what might have happened to her had we said no also?

Sorry to be so lengthy but I am very passionate about this.
