Message:   Hello Billy, Graham and all who read this,
Having had a look at the Web site and seeing the list of Fairmile built Sputniks brings back some memories.I sailed as a Share fisherman(no fish no money)from 1964 till 1967 aboard the Mary Croan. She had been converted from a trawler to a Seine net boat, we worked from Oban in the summer time mostly around Skerryvore and the Passage of Tiree and from Fraserburgh in the winter working mostly 5 or 6 hours North of the Port. Everything you did then was hard manual labour, from pulling ropes away from the coiler to scooping the fish into the boxes, gutting, washing and stowing the fish. All on an open deck in all weathers. They were good sea boats but very watery having such a flare on the bow they used to spray quite a bit, also the gunnel was not very deep and when she rolled in any weather she would dip the lee gunnel and when that happened you had to stop gutting and grab the handrails on the side of the wheel house or you would be washed over the side along with the fish and baskets. We had a bad fire aboard her in 1967 and I left her after that.
Best wishes
Jack Gault
