Welcome! This forum is about interpersonal manipulation (especially in its extreme forms) and also about how we are all the hero of our own stories, our own lives.

Highly manipulative relationships and groups include battering relationships, cults, and many others which are more subtle and therefore harder to spot. Being a healthy hero is centered on the opposite -- becoming as autonomous as possible and endorsing the autonomy of others.

Feel free to ask, to comment, and to share.  And please feel free to use a pen name! I know that a lot of times we want to keep our anonymity.

Message:   You've got it Carrie -- manipulators ever so subtly, ever so sneakily, destroy our ability to detect their lies. That is one of the first things they begin working on (at least the ones who have well-developed manipulative skills ).

They sows seeds of distrust -- distrust for ourselves and our own ability to discern the truth, and distrust for all others (who the manipulator knows might strip out the cobwebs so you can see they truth).

On a rough guess, how often have you (everyone reading this thread) seen charismatic communication that has masked manipulation? Please, tell us about it -- was it easy to spot? How did you eventually spot it? Once you saw behind the charming ways, how easy was it for you to break away from the manipulator?

The more we share with each other, the more we learn how to avoid manipulative traps.
