Welcome! This forum is about interpersonal manipulation (especially in its extreme forms) and also about how we are all the hero of our own stories, our own lives.

Highly manipulative relationships and groups include battering relationships, cults, and many others which are more subtle and therefore harder to spot. Being a healthy hero is centered on the opposite -- becoming as autonomous as possible and endorsing the autonomy of others.

Feel free to ask, to comment, and to share.  And please feel free to use a pen name! I know that a lot of times we want to keep our anonymity.

Message:   Hi Peryll,

Oh how well I remember the grief! It can be crushing, but hang on. The grief will lessen as you build new dreams, as you find the ways to protect yourself, and as you regain your own sense of reality...as you regain your self. Good things CAN come from all that pain and horror...time and again I have heard (and I have said it myself as well) that without having lost one's self, a person often times will never truly know their self.

Going through this experience gives us the opportunity to build/rebuild our self, the who of who we are, into the person we really want to be. It forces us to examine everything we took for granted, to reassess what we believe, our attitudes, our life choices....

As foul and horrible as it is to be the victim of extreme manipulation, we really can turn the mud into gold as we move into being a survivor, and from there into being a victor.

It will take time... and remember that it is okay to grieve. You have had to face some truly incredible losses; grief is normal and necessary.
