Welcome! This forum is about interpersonal manipulation (especially in its extreme forms) and also about how we are all the hero of our own stories, our own lives.

Highly manipulative relationships and groups include battering relationships, cults, and many others which are more subtle and therefore harder to spot. Being a healthy hero is centered on the opposite -- becoming as autonomous as possible and endorsing the autonomy of others.

Feel free to ask, to comment, and to share.  And please feel free to use a pen name! I know that a lot of times we want to keep our anonymity.

Message:   In my observations, I have found that the net should never be seen as anything more than a way to make contact with others, not as a way to 'get to know' another person. We *cannot* make true evaluations of another person, simply because there is not enough data.

Instead, we inadvertently filter what we give out to others (trying, if nothing else, to put our best foot forward). And in turn, we inadvertently filter what comes in to us through our own mood of the moment, our expectations, hopes and dreams, our own way of perceiving the world, etc.

This happens anyway, even face to face. It happens so much more, however, when we are communicating using less "data-rich" venues such as email, chats, or even over the phone.

We all need to recognize these limitations in our online communications. We need to make sure that we don't let attraction move any further until we have a large enough, complete enough body of information regarding who a person is, how they think, how they spontaneaously react in all sorts of situations (including *very importantly* highly stressful situations), and so on.
