Usually a swinging voter

Getting ready for the election - some thoughts on voting
During my 20s, I was a ‘die-hard’ ALP voter. Since then I have been a ‘swinger’, basing my vote on the issues rather than the party. The Libs lost the 2000 election because many of the Ministers lost sight of what they had to do to support their electorate (great memories of Graham Kierath rapidly leaving the ABC televised commentary once he saw the swing against him). Overall, I thought the Libs had done a good job at managing the economy but did become complacent after a long time in office. This current ALP government faces a similar back-lash from the electorate. Why? – arrogance and complacency in terms of looking after the electorate. Perhaps this government has also been too long in power. The ‘minor parties’ and independents offer an alternative to voters who are looking to give the major parties a ‘kick-in-the-bum’. But if there is a major swing to these candidates, we risk having a parliament hamstrung for making the important decisions for the welfare of people in WA. I consider the last thing we want is a parliament where one or two minor party members or independents have the ‘casting vote’ power. We need a government that has the power to MAKE DECISIONS and one that knows there WILL BE a vote back-lash at the next election if they do not perform. Too many of Ministers in the current government have served long terms and so might not be too worried about being voted out in the 2012 election. I will vote for the Libs, only because I consider there should be a political party in power that has experience at governing, the current government does not deserve another go (given so many stuff-ups) and to avoid the potential ‘hamstrung’ parliament scenario. |
