That Failing feeling again..

Tomorrow will be a great day for the Worst Paper. It will have another chance to give classroom teachers in W.A. a good flogging.
I would bet my blind grandmother that the headlines will be screaming that children in W.A. schools are the worst writers in the nation.

Our students have done very well in all other areas, reading and maths etc, but the focus will be on our perceived failure.

Somewhere our friends from the paper may insert the fact that has had a huge bearing on these results.
OUR STUDENTS ARE SIX MONTHS YOUNGER than the rest of Australia.

Bet you have to really search for the only relevant info in the whole article.

Re: That Failing feeling again..

Our kids have always been younger but have their results always been worse?

What are the odds anybody in a position of power will admit that the negative impact of OBE could be starting to surface?

Mr 'World's Best Practice' perhaps?

And they are the product of OBE!!!

But at least their self esteem will be great.

Re: That Failing feeling again..

implications of being six months younger in primary school obviously lost on some people. Six months is a long time at this age.
The testing lacks validity unless all are similar age group.
OBE can't be mouthed as the culprit in all things bad in education.

Does that mean our kiddies are exceptional at maths?

Re: That Failing feeling again..

rob,

I'm not sure you get my question. WA kids have always been younger than their interstate counterparts. Have we always been down the bottom of these test results? I only got a glimpse of the news item tonight so I don't know what tests they are referring to.

NAPLAN (the old WALNA) testing.

I believe these results are supposed to be released next week.

National Assessment Program Literacy And Numeracy (NAPLAN).

NAPLAN - it sounds like something you get on prescription from the chemist shop. Take three a day after eating.

Re: That Failing feeling again..

A few years ago I did some research on how OBE was implemented in different countries. One common thread from all the places where OBE was tried, was that writing was the first subject to show a decline in student results.

SET, it always makes me think of NAPALM; and that's what they should use to get rid of OBE.

So true. And not just six months (now twelve months, with the later starting age students in years 3 and 5) YOUNGER, but with twelve months less compulsory education under their belts.

"The testing lacks validity unless all are similar age group"
The testing lacks validity anyway (because of highly 'rortable' administration procedures); it is completely ridiculous that the equivalent of Yrs 4,6, and 8 (ES) are compared with our Yrs 3, 5 and 7.

NAPLAN - always makes me think of 'no plan' Boxer which pretty much says it all as well!
