"The Academy Awards for Education"

Just in case there was one teacher out there still not convinced McGowan is a goose, here's some more proof.
"Academy Awards"- What a bloody insult.
To lob this condescending crap in the midst of the most contemptible treatment of the workforce ever is beyond belief.
STICK YOUR AWARDS AND MAKE A DECENT OFFER TO EVERY TEACHER.

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

How stupid can this man be?

Quote: "Unveiling the new awards today, Mr McGowan said the Carpenter Government was building on the State’s booming economy to deliver a world-class education system for the future."

Has he not yet understood that he should be using the benefits of this 'booming economy' to pay teachers appropriately to ensure that there ARE teachers in the future?

Quote "The new awards provide $375,000 in prize money for the State’s best teachers, principals, school support staff, TAFEWA lecturers and schools,” he said.

Oh whoopee doo! More money being thrown down the loo! Stop your insulting little prize giving for an elite minority just so that you can use it for some PR grandstanding and bite into the real issue : teacher shortages because of insultingly low salaries.

Quote: “We have one of the best education systems in the world and it is important that we recognise the achievements of those people who are at the forefront of our success."

No, Mr McGoo. We HAD a very good education system but OBE, mismanagement, DET deafness, pathetic pay and lack of appropriate support systems have undermined it so that the rats have been deserting the sinking ship for some time now. (Been out to Gilmore recently, McGoo?)

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

You know we could have some real fun with this little competition.
What if we supported a candidate - say a random gave him a whole history and persona and nominated him.
I think McComish the lawyer turned actor made areal name for himself by impersonating big wigs in business etc, only to befuddle everyone with his comments etc.
You really could do a number on Mc Goo and he would be that thick he would not see it coming.

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

What a great idea, dis. When I was in high school a group of us created a student who, to our adolescent delight, was regularly summonsed to the office for non-attendance.
I would imagine that "Tom McCracken" graduated from high school, did his 3 years (we're talking 70's), then post graduate studies, and is now the type of teacher McGowan is looking to reward with his prestigious awards.
(Apologies to any real Tom McCrackens out there)

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

Where is the "Balga Works Memorial Award", for the principal that wasted the most public money (or can you only do that AFTER you've been a Principal of the Year)? Does being investigated by the CCC or being charged by the police improve your chances?

"Does being investigated by the CCC or being charged by the police improve your chances?"

SpoilSport I guess you could say something like "my intitiatives and work in the area of education has been widely reported and received significant attention from a wide sector of the community and various government agencies."

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

Smithers, you misunderstand the premise behind these awards.

It’s not to recognise individuals who have made a real difference; otherwise the maligned principal at Halls Creek who initiated the highly effective attendance-welfare initiative would have received a reward. Instead he got a special Spanish Inquisition visit from Ravlich, Paul Albert and the district director.

No. The awards are for people who make top-down ‘initiatives’ look good. That means we should be recognising and rewarding those principals that pushed through the middle schooling model, inclusivity programs and OBE.

WA Teacher of the Year (metropolitan) - $25,000;
WA Teacher of the Year (rural/remote) - $25,000;
WA Lecturer of the Year (TAFEWA) - $25,000;
WA Principal of the Year - $40,000; and
WA Support Staff Member of the Year - $25,000

Why does the Principal get more?

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

I agree with Smithers on this. If many people nominated Marko, they mioght listen. If not, we just let DET get away with nonsense. Why shouldn't the best people get the awards?

We can't just whinge all the time.

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

I'm quite sure Marko would smile widely at the suggestion he be nominated. As suggested though, these awards will never recognise contributions to the BIG picture. They will always go to those who toe the line, cut'n'paste outcomes, nod at all the right times and basically bend over forwards to accomodate DET "initiatives". [May I suggest Clyne Tubbs, our fictional co-student at Claremont in the 80's.]

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

Anyone can nominate a teacher

Parents, Students, fellow teachers and Admin.

I know two teachers who were nominated last year One was from her Principal and he other by a parent.

We had pamphlets sent out last year - haven't seen them for this year yet.

Re: "The Academy Awards for Education"

Imagine sitting in the workshop with all the other aspirants, all the self-promoters and CV stuffers smiling through their teeth at each other! It makes my stomach turn, as does the general idea of the awards when teachers aren't being paid what they deserve in the first place. Any decent teacher wouldn't even be able to find the time for this wretched vomit.
