U.S. needs to open eyes to 'phage therapy'

In U.S.A. TODAY dated 7/6/2006 article with the provocative title: US needs to open eyes to 'phage therapy' - see

Re: U.S. needs to open eyes to 'phage therapy'

I am writing to you on behalf of the The Antony van Leeuwenhoek Association for the Prevention of Cruelty and Defamation of Micro-organisms – Superbugs Division to indicate that we fully support the position of regulatory agencies like FDA. We object to any efforts at violating the rules of fair play in the war of superbugs vs. humans. The deployment of weapons of mass destruction in the form of bacteriophages is considered totally apprehensive! Should you persist on the course you are currently contemplating, we will consider alerting and deploying our secret service superbug squat to take appropriate action.

As superbugs we believe in fighting a fair fight. We believe in sustainability of humanity and therefore do not harvest more humans than the herd can sustain and we preferentially harvest the weak and the old. Surely you must agree that without our constant vigilance there would have been only standing room on this earth by now.

We hope that you will reconsider your actions in working for the routine deployment of weapons of mass destruction for superbugs in the form of bacteriophages and we are thankful for any individual or agency that actively resists the deployment of bacteriophages!

Remember:

I am your superbug, your favourite superbug
I make someone happy each pay day
So please don’t let them phage us superbugs away!

Yours truly,

Cause-****zki Ecoli, President
The Antony van Leeuwenhoek Association for the Prevention of Cruelty and Defamation of Micro-organisms – Superbugs Division.

Bill,

The above article you provide a link to says at least 50 people die a day due to superbugs.

I think that reporter better do more or better research. In my experience as a nurse I would be more inclinded to say hundreds of people fall victim to this plague everyday. Possibly thousands if you want to include all the deaths from system failures related to the use of antibiotics and other drugs used to cope with side effects from drugs used to treat the superinfections.

Re: U.S. needs to open eyes to 'phage therapy'

Dear Barbara:

I noticed that as well - 50x365 is only 18,250. As you probably know statistics in this area are very dicy and it depends what is included. For Canada with just over 30 million population we use 8,000 to 12,000 anually or 30 per day - the US has about 10x Canada's population and I have seen figures of 40,000 to 90,000 anually for U.S.A. and I am sure that is low balling it. That is why I can't understand why FDA and HC are not allowing the use of phage therapy after explaining all the science to patients, even if only on a case by case basis on compassionate basis which is legal.

TO PHAGE OR NOT TO PHAGE LET THE PATIENTS DECIDE - NOT TO GIVE THEM THE INFORMATION AND TREATMENT OPTION SHOULD BE A CRIME!

Well, CRIME is to gentle a word to me. More like EVIL.

There are a number of effective therapies for serious disease avaiable in foreign countries and doctors or others who try to make it available to the public here are raided, arrested and destroyed.

When it comes to why therapies are permitted or not permitted follow the money. If the pharmceutical companies stand to loose money due to alternate choices then they will be banned, or so it seems to me.

Re: U.S. needs to open eyes to 'phage therapy'

Dear Barbara:

Most of the time you would be right to suspect pharmaceutical companies in resisting these types of treatments. However, they have largely vacated the antibiotic development area. In the case of phage therapy the regulatory agencies are soley responsible - phage therapy was discovered almost 100 years ago therefore it can't be discovered again and there are problems with patent protection; however, nothing stops governments/health agencies from taking the same approach that most of them do for vaccine production. The work can be done be private contractors for the government. There are enough phage therapy comapnies ready to do that in several countries, certainly US, Canada, UK etc.

Here is something to think about: The deaths due to microbial foodborne disease in Canada are 30 and in the USA about 5000 annually from all sources. On the other hand, several US papers I have estimate 17 million deaths due to microbial infections worldwide annually (a paper from US Congess said 15 million). Think of it, that is more than half the population of Canada, or almost 3 Holocausts and it took 6 years to produce 55 million victims during WWII, now we produce more victims in 4 years in the war with superbugs! How can we turn up our noses at a technology like phage therapy? How often is it said that something will have been worth it if it saves one life and yet we choose to let patients die rather than phage them. Someone said:

Sei doch ein Mensch Mensch!(Be a human human!)

Re: U.S. needs to open eyes to 'phage therapy'

Yes, well, since phage therapy is no big secret and is available in other countries, and our pharmaceutical companies just are not doing it you have to ask why.

Why? I would guess lack of sufficient profit is usually what holds most companies back. Then you could consider govenment funding but many people in political power are involved with major corporate pharmacies, many.

I don't know what the answer is. I continually see therapies successfully used in Europe or other places that save lives and improve quality of life but it is not found for the Americans here on our soil due to FDA regulations.

Which brings me to another question I have in regard to the work done with biofilm in the wound care treatment center in Texas. Is this work with phages? I didn't really see that word there when I skimmed over the article. It this the place people should go with resisitent infections?

Re: U.S. needs to open eyes to 'phage therapy'

Barbara:

Some time ago when you went to the website of the wound care center in Texas and looked under case hitories they had phage therapy cases and showed results both in words and picture. They also gave a number of presentations at medical meetings in California this spring --- then they removed the phage therapy case histories -- I have printed versions of the reports - it seemed to work. The issue is simple: The more citizens read the just released book Viruses vs. Superbugs - see http://www.bacteriophagetherapy.info and then write to their elected representatives and demand that treatment option the sooner it will become available. At the moment patients have to travel to Georgia in Europe - I have several films documenting such trips - most recent one shows a former sherif from California being treated. Title: Killer Cure: The Amazing Adventures of Bacteriophage - it is very convincing.
The problem is NOT pharmaceutical industry; it is the regulatory-medical community!!! How many nursing journals do you know that have or would carry an article on phage therapy? I have tried without success. There are some very fine phage therapy companies in the USA that would supply phages - try http://www.phageinternational.com

Re: U.S. needs to open eyes to 'phage therapy'

Hi Bill and everyone else.

Stalin hit the nail on the head when he said "The death of one man is a tragedy; the death of thousands is a statistic".

When some Head of State's wife or family member dies of MRSA or an antibiotic complication then and only then will we see some action.

Sweet dreams!
