Phage Therapy, beware of Giants
I am worried that Phage Therapy patents, if bought out by the large pharmaceutical industry, will suffer the same demise as gas automobile alternatives in the 1970s. The large automobile corporations bought the patents to various alternate fuel methods then through them away to rot in drawers to prevent competition. In this way Detroit secured its financial profits for the next 20 years, which today is faltering due to alternative fuel modalities. More than profits are at risk should Phage therapy be kept from the patients' bedside. It would be criminal for phage therapy patents to be bought out and remain unused as Big Pharma tries to protect its antibiotic drug legacy. I hope all Phage Therapy startups, especially those that are showing promise in clinical trials, hold tightly to their ingenuity regardless of immediate financial profit from a buy-out, for the benefit of the people whose lives Phage Therapy will save. More than money is as risk if Phage Therapy is thrown into a dusty drawer; many people will die from infections that could be cured with bacteriophage. I hope that the large pharmaceutical industry will instead embrace Phage Therapy as a new avenue for their profits and support the advancement of Phage Therapy into the western medical tradition. Most sincerely concerned, Daniel, |

Daniel: I do not think the problem are the large pharmaceutical companies. In my opinion it is the regulatory agencies and governments. Phage therapy will not likely replace antibiotics but enhance treatment of bacterial infections. If governments used the same approach as is used for production of vaccines and specifically preparations for the anticipated bird flu epidemic, then most countries could be using phage therapy in weeks or at best months. Where there is a will there is a way! Where there is no will there is no way! |

Hello Daniel Have been recently studying bacteriaphage info since the spinach recall "o6. What a revelation of God's wonderous provision to us. Trouble is, man is "greedy" and the unholy alliance of the FDA and the Pharmacutical Industry is the Giant. whatever they do does not benifit humanity which I'm sure you are aware. Phages are a miracle of nature and what worries me is that man will genetically change their structure for their own greedy interests. You know the drug industry doesnt want us well. Oh the money that rolls in. Say, could there be a connection to why so many microbiologists have "mystereously" turned up dead recently? I for one, thru diligent research, DID cure my Diabetes II by switching to all organics. And in 3 weeks! Liars, all of them!!! God bless you Daniel and stay safe. Karen in Ohio |

It is not only the giants we need to beware of! When I was still a reluctant system sycophant microbiologist (long before I retired) I came to realize that my job depended NOT on finding solutions to microbial problems; but rather, the more bug problems there were the safer and better were my job prospects. I call it the symbiotic-parasitic relationship syndrome! Without superbugs where would all the superbug pimps make their living? Without pollution where would all the environmentalists work? Without obesity what would the obesity dependent professionals do. Right now there are companies ready to produce phages for treating bacterial infections; however, without regulatory approval they can't do a thing - let's put the blame where it belongs! |
