training issue
Hi Dean: My horse started mildly throwing her head up during lope departures this winter. She has done this in the past and I thought I had corrected it. Apprently not. Teeth have been checked and are fine. Just using a wire snaffle on her, or mild short shanked, training bit. I understand your video on how you go about correcting this by stopping the horse and trying again, then letting go of reins when she is correct. Hopefully my understanding of your video is correct. My question is when I ask for the lope departure do I just put her into position, ask her to lope and wait for her to make the mistake of throwing her head up or do I collect her tight before I ask and try and keep her from throwing her head up? Thanks |

Re: training issue
You want to collect her and keep her from throwing her head. Show her how to do it correctly before you try and have her do it on her own. You mentioned the word stop. I do not stop the horse I take the horse back to the walk without releasing then try again. The horse will get the reward of the release when it does the departure properly. Dean Brown |
