tracking into tracks at a trot
Hi Dean: This winter a new coach tells me that my saddle does not fit my reining horse because she does not step precisely into her tracks at a trot. (She is not a reining person and uses barrel saddles on her lesson horses) No other riding instructor I've had has told me this. I have a 3/4" impact gel pad with a very thin soft, open waffle weave synthetic pad underneath. (She is a small QH horse, although wide and bit mutton withered so this waffle pad keeps the saddle from slipping) The saddle does go backwards a wee bit after 20 minutes of riding. There is not a hair out of place when I take the saddle off, no white hairs, no sores, or muscle damage (she has been ridden in this saddle for 3 yrs). All I notice is a very light waffle imprint on either side of her withers when I take the saddle off. How important is steping into a horse's tracks at the trot? Can I go to a 1/2" pad without hurting her? She has no behaviour problems outside of the fact she is a bit lazy and bored in an arena. Thanks. |

Re: tracking into tracks at a trot
Reining Senior, I find it very unlikely that your saddle is causing a problem with your horses tracks. If you are in doubt examine your horse on the lounge line and see for yourself. You can use more pad and it would not be a problem. To be honest there are people (Coaches / instructors) that come up with stuff to cover their own shortfalls in teaching and abilities. I would be interested in knowing what this is causing your horse to have trouble doing training or working wise. |

Re: tracking into tracks at a trot
WOW, THANKS. I feel much better as I could find nothing wrong with my horse or saddle. This is temporary coaching (just so I could ride in an indoor arena for the winter months). I will be done in March. I'll take home what has worked and leave the nonsense at her barn door. |
