stiffness

dean, just lately my mare is really stiff to her right, i really notice it on her right circles and even when she is loping straight on her right lead. i'm not sure where it originates from. what would be some exercises to help her through this.
she is ridden regularly at least 4 times a week. thanks for your help. karen.

Re: stiffness

What does she do to present this stiffness. Or what reaction are you getting when you handle her face?

Re: stiffness

hi dean , when i rode today i thought about your question about how she presents her stiffness in her right circles. i am needing to bump her with my left outside leg to encourage her to keep on her right circle. her body feels straight, not bending to the right. if i don't work at this she really wants to lead change to her left lead. we did our right circles first today , she was somewhat unwilling about giving her face too. left circles were better . her face was alot softer to the left too. her right lead changes are still surprisingly good though. do you have some ideas or exercises to soften her to the right . thank you , karen.

Re: stiffness

Karen,
i have to apologize for taking so long to get back to you.
Your first question is about where the stiffness originates. Your horses head is a means to control the shoulders. So the stiffness is in the shoulders. This is where the stiffness starts from. But the horse being light or more sensitive in the mouth enables us to maintain position. But also the about of work you have to do to keep your horse in a right circle is your horse is kind of mentally blocked out that direction. I think you need to start with some sort of exercise that works the horse to the right until that mental block goes away. I would start with just holding the right side at your lope until he gets soft and stops being stiff. You might not get to release your horse the first day. Or the second day but eventually your horse will get off that bridle. Then you release your horse and get off and put him away. Then you will go through a heavy soft game for a few days. As long as the horse knows that you are going to stick with it until he gets soft you will win. No bumping the face. Just holding.

Re: stiffness

Just to throw another thought out there - is your mare in need of chiropractic services? If the stiffness occurred recently, then she may have hurt herself and is out of alignment.
