changes in the stop
My three year old in soft in the face, makes the form of stopping when asked to stop, parks his rear very well from a trot, sometimes three or four feet slide at a lope,he was sliding in the front also but has stopped this, have tried two different farriers and shod him with 1" sliders. How much wider than 1" sliders have you ever had to go with? I know he feels and looks like he could slide but, he's not trying hard enough even though every time I stop him at a lope,I back him up very fast, rollback and travel across the track say whoa, then pickup the reins, back him up and repeat. |

Re: changes in the stop
I would fist suggest getting your colt more sensitive to the word whoa. Start from a stand still and without picking up on the reins say Whoa! then get your colt back. Repeat this until you say the word from a stand still without pushing your feet forward or picking up on the reins and your colt gets back. Not just walks back but jumps back a little bit. Then do the same thing from a walk. Then from a trot. Now once your colt will hit the ground without you helping him then I would decide on if you need more shoe. They make a 11/4 inch slider that works well. Dean Brown |
