pivot foot

Hi: Someone pointed out to me that my mare is using her outside hind leg to pivot around. She has nice form and plants her hoof, it just happens to be the wrong one. She does this sinning in both directions. I noticed on the October video that the 3 yr old gelding you are riding also pivots on his outside hind sometimes and switches back and forth. This doesn't seem to bother you. Just how serious is this going to be in a green reiner class?

I have done little circles one way and spin the other. I have moved her inside hip over and then spin and that usually causes her to switch to inside, however, she sometimes switches back. I have also leaned my upper body and weight to the inside of the spin and this also has helped her to change to the inside hind hoof. I have someone to watch her spin so that when she is correct I can walk her out. How do I learn to feel when she is on the wrong pivot foot? She is still only green broke (10 mos of riding by a non pro under professional guidance, I acquired her after this). Any other ways to help fix this?

Re: pivot foot

Hi Dean: I found another post on your forum where you dealt with pivoting on wrong leg. You suggested that the writer watch the inside hind leg in the spin and if on the wrong pivot foot, walk horse forward, watch when inside hind leg is under the horse and ask for the turn. (This is my understanding of what you said). This morning I walked her around until I was confident that I could feel the inside hind leg under her. Then I moved her into little circles. When I could feel the inside hind leg under her I asked for a quarter turn, if she was right I walked her out. (I still had someone watching as an aid for me.) She used her inside pivot foot every time! I think I will just do this for about 3 or 4 days before I even ask for a spin. Great, my husband can go back to seeding. Thank you.
