Taking the left lead
I am finding that my two year old is having trouble taking and holding his left lead. Under saddle I can force him to take it but he falls into it and then loses it quickly. I decide to put him a lounge line to see what is going on. He can't even get his left lead on a lounge line. He gets the wrong lead I break him to a trot and ask again. Once in awhile he will get or swap from the right but looses after one lap or less. He hadn't any problem with this before. I am wondering if it could be a soreness problem, growing pains, just part of being young and his body growing and changing? I think we are just gonna go back to lounging for the left lead and see if we can build up his strength. Any thoughts? |

Re: Taking the left lead
Is this horse breaking to a trot and then picking up the wrong lead, or is it falling out of lead? Dean Brown |

Re: Taking the left lead
If he takes the correct left lead he wont hold it long and breaks back to a trot. On a loung line goig left he continually takes the right swaps to left makes maybe one lap and breaks to the trot. He will canter all day for you never breaking gate on the right. On the right lead he is soft no pulling, On the left lead he is really pulling while on the lounge line. He may just be stiff to left. I ask for him to give to right and he snaps his head back to the fender with the lightest touch. To the left he really strugles to get his head around maybe about halfway, kinda like we would if we had a stiff neck. |

Re: Taking the left lead
OK went out today and worked some more on a lounge line after doing some stretching of the neck to left, he is little better today with taking his left lead. Holding it longer but you can see him getting light in front and wanting to swapp. You can see him picking up his left front as if he wants to change but staying on the left. He's really dominant on the right. |

Re: Taking the left lead
He is getting better at picking up the left lead. I am finding that the back end doesn't want to follow along all the time. I been working him a smaller pasture and aking for it in the corners this seems to help. He is getting trimmed and shoed tomorrow. Hopefully this will help him travel. He has an inside heel on his left front that grows faster than the rest of his foot and its been awhile since he was trimmed. |
