Sliding plate when?

I was watching the Febuary video part 2 and see the palimino horse does have shoes on in the back. Are these sliding plates? When is a good time to put sliders on a colt?

I had in past waited some time to put hind shoes on. I heard that putting shoes on the young horse can cause his feet not grow to full potential. I heard some say not to put shoes or sliders on until your horse is trying and stoping on his back end. Are you running fonts and backs or just backs?

Re: Sliding plate when?

If he had shoes on it would be just hinds. I think you are very safe with the back feet as far as shoes go. The hind feet do not carry the work load that the front feet carry. I try to leave shoes off in front as long as I can. Sometimes early into their three year old year.
Optimal for me is when that horse starts listening to the word WHOA! then I like to put shoes on so as to not discourage the horse. You want to be carefull with the size of slidder you put on for you do not want to scare the young horse when he stops. It is better a little harder for him or her then too easy.
