young stud around mares
My young 2 year old stud colt has 33 rides now since January. I been riding him in an enclosed pasture that butts up next to the mares field. He never acts up when we ride down around them by the fence. Today I decide we would go outside the fence and ride in the open. We cantering down to the lower field by the mares and maybe it was the difference in scenery. He started whinnieing and began to act studdy. Is there anything specific I should do to correct this behavior around other horses and mares? I imediatly asked him to whoa as he did nicely and made him back up and then stand quietly giving me his face. If he even moved an eye towards the mares I made him drop his head lower and focus on me. Then we proceded to work in the field next to the mares closly doing some along the fence exercises and he seemed fine and kept his attention off the mares. |

What you did is fine. Personally I just keep going and once that colt gets a little more face on him I would just push him deep up into the bridle when he does that to keep his attention on me. I worry a little bit about the stopping and fixing him cause he might start doing it to get out of work. Dean Brown |

Good point, I wouldnt want to start that habbit. I use to be bad at letting babies stop to poop. No more, thats a tuff one to break to later. I haven't had that problem with this guy, he knows I mean buisness. |
