antsy in the show pen
I have just bought a 5 yr old gelding and showed him for the first time last weekend. I have not shown much reining but have had many years experience in AQHA all-around showing. My problem is that as soon as he stepped foot into the show arena I felt him tense up and get "strong". He wanted to break into a jog as soon as we entered, anticipated lead changes, etc and in general seemed like a different horse than the one I had just been warming up. My question is how should I go about fixing this and what schooling in the arena would help? Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Re: antsy in the show pen
What your horse needs is allot of paid warm ups. Buy 5 or 6 at a time. Start with sitting in the middle. If it takes you two or three or 5 paid warm ups to get your horse to stand in the middle do it. Next. Start with your circles. If he is anticipating lead changes when you go through the middle go to steer your horse through the middle and then when he starts to go through the middle correct him. This will help confuse him enough that he will think if you can not make up your mind what you want then he is better to just circle until you are clear about what you want. ( I hope this makes sense ) Use ideas like this to confuse your horse for other problems that may arise. Dean Brown |
