lead swapping
(I hope this works, third try at getting it posted): I have been riding my horse with my hand too low, reins too long and she has become heavy on the front and strung out. This affected her stopping too because her hind end was not getting under her. Her head was always nice and low which is why I thought things were okay. Now I am trying to fix the problem and ride her more bitted up and collected. I keep my hand higher, about level with the horn or higher and have more contact on the reins. Our circles to the left are so bad now and she keeps swapping leads going around the circle. Her head is up higher now which is not her natural way to travel although she is more collected and is keeping her hind feet more under her. She feels unnatural and out of balance. It is a constant battle to keep the circle round and as I try to fix it, she swaps leads (only to the left). I feel like I am ruining my horse but she did need some fixing and our stops have improved with me keeping my hand up. What can I do about the circles to the left? |

Re: lead swapping
I think I understand what it is you are trying to say. Does your horse fall out of lead when you let her put her head down more? Dean Brown |

Re: lead swapping
It is possible, I do find myself dropping my hand unintentionally, out of habit. Also part of the problem is that as I try to keep her collected, she loses her drive and I am constantly pushing her forward. Even though I use the outside leg, she will swap leads. It also happens mostly as we are in the part of the circle that is near the end of the arena and around the 3/4 part, I could understand it more if it was at centre and she was just anticipating a lead change. It just occurred to me that before the lead swapping problem started, I would notice in our large fast circles to the left, in the same part of the circle, I would sometimes end up losing my inside stirrup and sitting way to the outside of my saddle. Maybe I am shifting my weight in the saddle too much? |

Re: lead swapping
Sorry to not be able to give you a good answer yet. Before you started trying to fix her with her collection did you have a problem with your circle? |

Re: lead swapping
yes I did have problems, she was not guiding to the left and leaning on the right rein very heavy. Then I would over correct and turn across the centre of the circle, it helped a bit and she is guiding somewhat better but not as well as going to the right. It seems everything to the left is a chore. |
