Bitting Up

I've got a 2 1/2 year old grand daughter of Peppy san badger. I've been riding her in a bosal. I am in the process now of putting her into a snaffle. Since she already understands giving her face to the side, do I still need to tie her head around? On the left side she trys to root, and is pretty stiff.

On the DVD it shows a 2yr old bitted up with a bungie. I have never bitted a horse in this manner. Is there anything I need to remember when doing this? I have been told repeatedly, that its not to be attempted by someone who has never bitted a horse before. I understand to start in a manner that is easy on the horse at first, but I'm lost concerning how fast to proceed with with this. (tightening the bungie)

Thanks!!

Re: Bitting Up

The first time you do it maybe lounge your horse a little first then bit the horse up so there is almost no pressure. Then just use good judgement and make it a little tighter. You will be able to tell if you are stressing the horse out too much. The horse will let you know how tight you can go. Each horse is different. You are going to stress the horse out a little bit otherwise it is not going to learn. Just take your time and I am sure you will be fine.
Just remember when bitting the horse up once you have made contact with the horse in a neutral or slightly raised position there are only a few inches between too loose and too tight. Make small adjustments and you will get the hang of it.
