Problem with the turnaround

Hi Dean,
I have a 3 yr old mare. The turnarounds are great once we get into them. She doesn't like to start nicely going to the right. She wants to walk out of the turnaround at the start and it seems like she is bracing with her left shoulder. Once we are in the turnaround she turns great. We don't have this problem going to the left. I have been backing her up if tries to walk forward and I have also been doing small circles. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. After about 5 tries she gets better, but I don't have that much time in show ring. PS. She has just started this new behaviour.

Can you tell me what your cue is to start the spin.

I use the neck rein and then if she doesn't go, I roll my left spur on her side.

Re: Problem with the turnaround

Sorry this is so late. I was going through the forum and noticed I missed this reply.
First you could try starting with the spur. My second point will be the most important point.
It is our human nature to always want to test things. Instead of once we have things working just maintaining them.
I would bet if you could discipline yourself for a week to not test your turn. Just ask her to turn and then show her what you want without giving her the time or the chance to make the mistake or do it wrong. Then in one weeks time test it. I am 99% sure that it will work fine. On the day you are going to test it start her a few times like you have been all week. Then if it works witch I am almost sure it should you have to only test once and awhile and the rest of the time MAINTAINE YOUR HORSE.
Please let me know how this goes.
