There has been a change in regulations in GA concerning metal detecting on private property.
The previous law stated that one must notify the state archaeologist office, in writing, 5 days prior to searching any historic site on private property.
This has been changed. A detectorist in GA contacted his legislator aftering loosing a site to a dozer. He did not have 5 days to wait. So the site was destroyed instead of the relics saved.
Althought the legislator wanted the law revoked he was able to get it changed to a simple notification. Done by leaving a message on an 800 number or sending an email. They have no authority to deny or inhibit your searching.
You must also have permission in writing from the property owner. Failure to take these steps is still an offense that could get you a ticket. However, the office could not give me a definitve answer as to what constitutes a historic or archaeological site. It seemed like they didn't know!
Here is the new GA code.
